It is hard to believe that a week has already passed since my degree show finished, so before it becomes a distant memory, I’m reflecting on what a massive achievement it was! It’s only just beginning to sink in, and even though I still have my dissertation to write, getting to this point has changed me and I can’t wait to see where I go next with my practice based research.

"Routes to Becoming" is the final exhibition of our journey with @maartsandlearning .Through practice based research, we questioned our connections to learning and education, exploring core notions of belonging, playfulness, memory, and nature.

We are incredibly grateful to all of our tutors, teachers, and technicians who made this exhibition possible after an incredible year (or two!) of learning and growing together.

Happy to be showing ‘Growing up at the bumps’ as part of the MA Arts and Learning degree show 2026: Routes to Becoming. I am grateful to this year’s students for sharing their exhibition space with me as we all prepare to leave goldsmiths and explore unknowns on the other side.

‘Growing Up at the Bumps’
Reclaimed, hand-finished concrete, C-Type photograph, projected video clips

A photograph made in 1995 titled ‘A Picture of Me’ and a series of video clips filmed in 2020 at Hackney Bumps Skatepark. My search to find or construct an identity for myself in 1995 is contrasted with an image of myself in motherhood, skating with my three children. Projected onto concrete, reclaimed from the demolition of skate ramps at the bumps, our presence affects the physical space, and it affects us.

Learning to skate alongside my children, aged 47, began an ongoing auto ethnographic enquiry through which I consider motherhood, risk, ageing, time, injury and productivity to explore the ambiguity of doing something entirely for oneself. The dislocation between what it feels like and how it is seen by others is ever-present in my work from my mid-20’s to now, in my mid-50’s.

‘Traces’ @florencetrust by Melina Merlin Paesler, Ana Mastretta Yanes and Jorge Cantu traces Mexican cultural narratives in arts practice. @moxieravenstudio is studying for the PhD Art Practice and Learning at Goldsmiths, and @ana_mastretta for the MA Arts and Learning. They both have a practice research focus that explores ways of reinterpreting Indigenous Mexican artefacts and Mesoamerican culture with feminist lenses.

Melina and Ana are in several group shows this year, some of which - like Traces, are assisted by Melina’s artist’s residency at the Florence Trust.

Centre for Arts and Learning congratulates Melina and Ana for their innovative collaborations!

Trips to the showroom with @maartsandlearning earlier this year.

A thoughtful time spent with @theshowroomlondon. For me, the visits raised questions around what participatory community arts look like.

Slides 1-5: The exterior of the gallery is an exhibition in and of itself, it is a reflection of their dedication to engage their surrounding community. The artist here is Mandy El-Sayegh, and her work entitled, This Is a Sign Notes on Assembly.

Slide 6: Multidisciplinary Artist, Sojung Jun: I Do Nine Tailed Fox.

The last 2 slides: My student colleagues and I spend time collaborating with young curators in developing a response to a design breed: create design proposal for the exterior of the gallery. We based our ideas around our identities; Jamaica, Ghana and China.

In this workshop, we will explore our relationship with the archaeological past and present through the Venus of Tamtoc, a sculpture from the Huastec region of Mexico.

Very little is known about this sculpture beyond its discovery in fragments beneath a sacred water spring. Rather than attempting to fill these gaps, this session invites participants to embrace the unknown and to engage with questions of meaning, absence, and mystery.

Through drawing, writing, and collective sharing, we will reflect together on what it means to encounter an artwork that resists fixed interpretation.

Open to all Goldsmiths UOL students.

‘Plural Horizons’ were envisioned in Molly Pardoe’s PhD Art Practice and Learning viva exhibition at @ampgallery.

@mollycpardoe’s cohesive body of work explores transnationalism through painting. @mirandamatthews has supervised Molly, with @esthersayers, since 2020. Centre for Arts and Learning is delighted with Molly’s developments in practice research.

@maartsandlearning students visited Molly’s exhibition to address questions about how and why artworks are curated for exhibition, on this atmospheric and fruitful occasion. #transnational #painting

As part of one of my modules on the @maartsandlearning we were asked to Revisit our Practice. My childhood photos have been a part of my practice for over a decade so it only felt right to use them as a theme for this assignment. Although I have used these photos in my work before, I hadn't found a way to come up with a completed artwork until now. This instalation is the first piece of art I have ever exhibited and I couldn't be more proud of it. I'm so excited so see what the MA will inspire me to creat next 🥹✨️
