There’s something about hiking in complete darkness. You can’t see the summit. You can’t see what’s a mile ahead. All you have is whatever your headlamp gives you, the next step in front of you, and the people moving alongside you. It forces you to be present. One foot at a time. You trust the trail. You trust each other. And eventually, without even realizing it, the darkness starts to fade.

Then you’re rewarded with First Light. 🌅

Seven years ago, we experienced that together at Maggie’s Peak. Coffee came out, hammocks went up, laughs were had, and for a little while we just sat there and took it all in.
This Sunday, 9.20.26, we get to do it again.
Same mountain. Different sunrise.

Registration + more info in bio.

there’s something about being outside before the rest of the world wakes up. starting in the dark, cold air, headlamps on, then slowly watching Lake Tahoe come into view as the first light starts to hit. that feeling right there. you got up for it. you climbed for it. you earned it.

we haven’t caught a Maggie’s Peak sunrise together since summer of 2019. on September 20th, we’re running it back with a 3am start.

this one is rated hard, no way around that. but there’s something different about hiking in the dark - you can’t see the whole climb ahead of you. you’re just locked in on what’s right in front of you, one step at a time. we’ll have a lead, mid & anchor, & the summit doesn’t have to be the win. find your pace, find your spot & catch the sunrise wherever the mountain takes you.

questions? reach out. we’re always happy to help. we also encourage everyone to do a little research beforehand & download @alltrails, especially since we’ll be starting in the dark.

free registration is live - link in bio:

: Loch Leven | Saturday 8/8

this one has been on our list since 2020 - then COVID had other plans. we’re finally making it happen. don’t let the elevation gain scare you. it’s a steady, gradual climb w/ plenty of spots to catch your breath. we’ll start early to beat the heat & (hopefully) the crowds. parking fills up quickly, but there’s overflow parking near the ranger station before the trailhead if needed.

bring plenty of water, a swimsuit, & something to snack on at the lake. trust us, you’ll want to jump in. at&t gets service at the trailhead, then it’s just us & the mountains. we’ll also be sharing the trail w/ overnight backpackers & campers, so let’s be respectful & give them some space. they’ve been carrying their house on their back while we just packed sandwiches. 😅

we do ask that everyone register for this one so we know who’s joining us. registration link is in our bio.

as always, feel free to reach out w/ any questions. we also encourage everyone to do a little research beforehand so you know what to expect.

: Pack It Out

Heading outside? Pack some water. Bring some snacks. Maybe download the map before you lose service. 😂 And whatever you bring with you, bring it back out! Wrappers. Bottles. Dog waste bags. Yep, even your banana peels and orange peels.

Want some extra trail karma? Throw a trash bag in your pack and pick up a few pieces on the way out. It doesn’t take much.

See trash. Pick it up. See a snake. Mind your business.
Pack it in. Pack it out.

: Twin Rivers USD ‘25-‘26

“I learned more on this hike than I expected.”

Those words came from one of the students we had the privilege of working with this past school year, and they perfectly capture why we’re so passionate about this work.

Thank you to Twin Rivers Unified School District for trusting Hike & Hit to partner with students from Hillsdale Elementary, Rio Tierra Middle School, Grant Union High School, and Norwood Middle School.

Throughout the year, students explored local trails, cared for their communities through cleanups, challenged themselves physically and mentally, and discovered that growth often begins just outside their comfort zone. We don’t share that student’s quote because it diminishes the classroom or the incredible educators who pour into these students every day. We share it because it reminds us that some lessons are simply experienced differently. Confidence, leadership, teamwork, and respect often come to life when students have the opportunity to apply them in the real world.

Being trusted to do this work in the same communities where Hike & Hit first found its purpose is something we’ll never take for granted. To every administrator, teacher, counselor, site coordinator, staff member, family, and especially every student - thank you for believing in this partnership. We look forward to seeing you on the trail again.

Let’s keep letting the outside in.
