The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the schedule of league games for the 2027 Women’s Division III season.

Due to the addition of new varsity program Denison University and previously Division I Saint Francis University, the league expands to 11 teams as Augustana College, Austin College, Carthage College, Connecticut College, Denison, Grove City College, Macalester College, Penn State Behrend, Saint Francis, Washington & Jefferson and Wheaton College will compete in 2027.

Competition begins on Friday-Sunday, February 26-28, as the Western Region teams of Austin, Carthage, Denison and Macalester trek to Rock Island, Ill., for 10 games hosted by Augustana College.

The Eastern Region teams of Grove City, Penn State Behrend, Saint Francis, W&J and Wheaton head to Connecticut College for 12 games in New London, Conn., on Saturday-Sunday, March 6-7.

All 11 games will compete on Friday-Saturday, March 19-20, as Grove City in Grove City, Pa., and Penn State Behrend in Erie, Pa., host 11 and nine games, respectively, in a Crossover Weekend in Western Pennsylvania to cap off the regular season.

The three-day, 17-game Division III Championship will occur on Friday-Sunday, April 9-11, at Carthage in Kenosha, Wisc., with 10 of the 11 teams eligible for the title. Due to Saint Francis transitioning from Division I to Division III, the Red Wolves will contest a pair of non-conference games during the championship weekend on April 9 and 10. Seeding for the championship is determined by regular season conference winning percentage.

The victor and runner-up from the CWPA Division III Championship earn berths to the 2027 USA Water Polo Division III Collegiate Water Polo Championship at a site to be determined.

NCAA Water Polo Secretary-Rules Editor David Alberstein released a rules interpretation and clarification pertaining to Penalty Throws.

Penalty Throws – How Taken
* Rule 9, Section 4, “Penalty Throws – How Taken,” was modified effective with the 2026 Men’s Season with the addition of the following sentence: “The player shall not release the ball inside the 5-meter line.”

* Questions have arisen regarding how this modification will be applied. Specifically, the issue is whether the officials will judge compliance with the rule by trying to assess the precise location where the ball left the hand of the shooter relative to the 5-meter line.

* Clarification: Rule 6, Section 1, Note states:” The location of a player is determined by the position of the center of the head relative to the 2-meter, 6-meter, half-distance, goal lines and the lines that define the Goal Area and the boundaries of the field of play.” The same principle applies to Rule 9 Section 4. The location where the penalty throw is released is determined by the position of the center of the head of the shooter relative to the 5-meter line. Hence, the shooter shall not release the ball with the center of their head inside the 5-meter line.

Macalester College alumna Jess Palmer-Sammons is preparing for a two-year assignment with the Peace Corps in Peru.

Palmer-Sammons, who recently graduated with a degree in biochemistry and Spanish, finished her time in Minnesota with both academic and athletic achievements. At Macalester’s year-end awards, she was named the M Club Women’s Team Student-Athlete of the Year, an honor acknowledging her performance across the college’s women’s sports programs.

Over her 78 career matches at Macalester, Palmer-Sammons recorded 153 goals, 70 assists, and 131 steals. Her individual performance contributed to a 16-6 overall record for the Scots, culminating in a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Tournament championship and a third-place national finish at the USA Water Polo Division III National Championship. Palmer-Sammons was selected to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Division III At-Large Division First Team.

This fall, Palmer-Sammons will begin her two-year Peace Corps deployment in Peru, focusing on rural community health education. Having grown up involved with SIPA, the Spanish immersion program on the Coastside near Half Moon Bay (Calif.), she will apply her language background to public health initiatives.

The deployment starts with a three-month training program in a suburb of Lima before she is stationed in a rural village. Her role will focus on public health education topics, such as youth nutrition and clean water.
