Prince - Keytar Solo feat. Maceo Parker and Larry Graham

It’s December 1999. The world’s counting down to a new millennium, and Prince is throwing the party of the century.

First comes the horn: Maceo Parker, the man James Brown made famous by shouting his name on stage, blows a groove so greasy you can almost smell the BBQ sauce. Then Prince steps up, straps on a custom purple keytar that looks like it flew in from another galaxy … and the baton passes from one funk legend to another.

Think about the funk family tree on this stage. Maceo was James Brown’s right hand for years, then brought his horn to Parliament Funkadelic. And Prince grew up studying all of it: JB’s moves, P-Funk’s freedom, Sly’s sound. On this night in 1999, the student and the master were sharing the same Paisley Park stage.

And of course Prince had a custom keytar. He didn’t just play instruments. He designed them. In 1994, he was granted a U.S. design patent for a keytar nicknamed the “Purpleaxxe,” shaped to echo the Love Symbol he used as his name back then.

And the timing is perfect. Prince wrote “1999” back in 1982 as a party at the end of the world. When the real 1999 finally arrived, he threw the party for real. Rave Un2 the Year 2000 premiered as a pay-per-view on New Year’s Eve, with guests including Maceo, Larry Graham, Morris Day, Rosie Gaines and Lenny Kravitz.

Watch his hands. He rips across those keys like the guitar god he was, bending notes, attacking the melody, never missing the groove. Head down, lost in it, like the rest of the world just disappeared. Synth player, guitar hero and showman, all in one body. Nobody else did it like this.

Prince never waited for the world to hand him the right tools. If what he needed didn’t exist, he invented it. Don’t let the limits of what’s already out there box you in. Build your own instrument. Create your own lane. And when the moment comes, play it like it’s the last party on earth.

🎷 Quick Step – Pure Funk Energy! 🔥
Jamming out to “Quick Step”, one of the most energetic and infectious grooves by the legendary Maceo Parker!
If you know funk, you know Maceo. As the iconic saxophonist behind James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic, and Prince, he practically invented the modern funk sax sound. His signature recipe? “2% jazz and 98% funky stuff”—percussive attacks, effortless timing, and unmatched energy. “Quick Step” captures that raw vibe perfectly!
🎙️ Audio Setup:
Capturing all the nuance and warm tone of the horn using the Neumann MCM 114 miniature clip mic. Absolutely loving the clarity and natural sound from this setup!
Turn the volume up and let me know in the comments how this groove feels! 👇🎧
