“What’s more revealing than the film itself is the discourse surrounding it: a ubiquity of gender-essentialist and bioessentialist defenses, as if any critique of any form is automatically a threat to representation. That instinct: to guard a film’s cause rather than evaluate its craft just proves how far behind we are as a nation in talking about gender politics in filmmaking.”

MEET THE TEAM 😎

To put it simply, Mac gives a fuck. Ever since his family brought him to Cinemalaya in 2014, he gave an even bigger fuck about local independent cinema. From then on, his dedication has sizzled into seeing and sharing our country’s unseen and unsung— the experimental, the student-made, the regional, and everything in between, which is how the idea of Kinoise crept up to him ever so slowly. He now serves as the collective's managing director and contributing writer, interviewer, editor, and region-trotter.

Give a fuck about the movies no one sees. Give a fuck about the pictures you take. Give a fuck about the poems your friends make. Give a fuck about the people you can share it all with. Take it from Mac, for him giving a fuck has led him to a wonderful family and community in Kinoise.

👏 Our short film exhibit last Saturday, January 25, 2025, was once again a great success! We are grateful to everyone who attended and witnessed the program.

A huge thank you to those who helped make this event possible—from @digitankstudiosinc, Events Hub, and the Grade 11 HUMSS students of PMMS Senior High School under the guidance of @winstone_arradaza. 🙌

We also want to express our gratitude to the directors who generously shared their works. For the first time, we showcased international short films, featuring directors from our neighboring countries. @samanhp.ir (Iran), @lilrappo1102 (Malaysia), @marygraceliew (Malaysia) and @hyejin_ehoh (South Korea), made possible through the support of our dear friend @coulicath. We also featured films made by filmmakers from Muntinlupa, Cavite and Laguna, @andygoescameo, @weareno.24, @fabo_drawing, @carmeltheslimy, Raya Martin and @sabaytones. Thanks to @reisalte_ and @supersunpom from @kinoise.ph for making this possible. 🥰

It was also an honor to highlight the works of talented Las Piñas filmmakers @tyronetaotao, @8loggg, @v.for.vincentt and @actiongirlgaby, whose creativity continues to inspire our growing film community.

We look forward to the next Timog Pelikula event! 🎬✨
THANK YOU!!!

“𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘢.”

Kinoise has always been about making noise for independent cinema. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without you—filmmakers and filmgoers. From houses, cafés, to discord, cinema holds no bounds. Thank you to all the partnerships and friendships formed. We appreciate everyone for supporting us in our first year. Here’s to another year of the grassroots, the radical, and the alternative! 🎬

Never thought we'd make it to two editions of the Critics Lab. But we've managed to assemble fourteen of the most brilliant, thoughtful, and hilarious film critics in the Philippines. Couldn't be prouder of all of them.

More on all of them soon!

To more editions, @qcinemaph!!!

The first day of the QCinema Critics Lab with the cohorts of the second edition Wax Singson, Ligaya Villablanca, Mac John Bautista, Acer Batislaong, Brontë Lacsamana, and Maverick Alviar.

At the @sine.pop lounge, they have the first two expert sessions in the lab — sit down sessions with film and publishing professionals where they get the opportunity to discuss issues around film writing in the Philippines while also brainstorming possible solutions.

In their first session, they discuss with writer, filmmaker, and translator Carl Javier about the evolving local media landscape and finding a place for their criticism. In their second session, they chat with @marg1nmag co-editor Alyssandra Maxine about collective film writing and zinemaking. They conclude the afternoon by developing a zine about the films in the Shorts Expo program, which will soon be digitally released via the QCinema website.

Sessions are led by QCinema Critics Lab founder and head coordinator Jason Tan Liwag. They are also attended by former lab participants Alyssandra Maxine and Red Sales.

It's QCinema SZN 🍀

Now on it's 12th year, we take the backseat as we hand over the discussion of the festival’s opening film to six talented emerging film critics who are part of this year’s QCinema Critics’ Lab.

Listen to them talk about Director’s Factory Philippines, an omnibus of four short films from four Filipino filmmakers collaborating with four other filmmakers from partner countries.

The factory is an umbrella of the Directors’ Fortnight from Cannes and this showcase is a co-production by Epicmedia (Bradley Liew), and DW-France (Dominique Wellsinki), the project has received support from Quezon City Film Commission and the local government of Dapitan (where most of the short films are shot).

Cold Cut
