What a full circle moment working with Chicago’s legendary, @iamroberttownsend! As a young Black creative, Hollywood Shuffle shaped me, made me laugh, and made me think long and hard about the kind of actor I wanted to be. The Black Acting School sketch was hilarious, but also reflective: would shuckin’ and jivin’ be my fate?

Then came The Five Heart Beats, and it was clear that the answer was resoundingly NO. Here was a film with three-dimensional, fully realized Black characters written and directed by a Black man. It resonated with me deeply. I never forgot Robert and @wwwjustleon in the roles of Duck and JT Matthews.

Then ushered in The Parent ‘Hood. I tested for the role of Michael Peterson. Robert coached all the contenders before we went in to read for producers. I was so star-struck that I barely remembered anything he told me to do. I didn’t get the role, but his kindness left an indelible mark on me.

In a later season, I got an audition for the Guest Star role of “Cole” playing opposite @reagangomez. I remembered some of the acting advice he gave me and applied it to my audition and booked the role. I never got to thank him for the opportunity.

Fast forward to @lenawaithe hiring us to direct and produce on @shothechi. When the role of Alonzo, Rob’s father came up, the very first person I thought of was Leon. Lena, and our Showrunners @justin.hillian and @jewelofthenile agreed and we booked him. He killed it!

Lena later hired Regan in the role of Candice. I flipped out. I was so happy to get to work with Regan again. She embodied Candice so well and exceeded all expectations.

Present Day: Lena lets us know that Robert would be directing an episode. I could hardly believe it. The moment he stepped on set, the cast and crew vibrated and began studying and taking notes. He left us changed. He raised the bar. And I still never got to thank him, so I’ll do it now…

Robert, thank you for elevating the show, the industry and the voices of Black artists. You paved the boulevards that we walk down now. Thank you for shaping me. Thank you for showing love and kindness to me and @qlenear back then and now. You are forever in our hearts. We love you!

Five years ago today, still in the havoc of Covid… we started principal photography on my feature film directorial debut. It’s a film called @BBoyBluesTheFilm. Based on the iconic book series by the great @james.e.hardy.9,, James, Tom, our dp @joda_the1, my brilliant (and very pregnant) producing partner, @madiahillscott and I set out to film in 11 days through Harlem and Brooklyn with seasoned actors and newcomers alike. The film went on to change all of our lives in more ways than one. With fellow producers like the legendary @frankgatson, @sampsonmccormick @stepfredla2.0 and the great @ayeprahl_badu, we pushed through the crazy times and made a LOVE STORY for us all. Special thanks to queen @monascottyoung for coming in and walking us into @betplus. And most of all… thank you to the incredible crew who killed every day with precision. If you haven’t seen it, we are now streaming on @primevideo & @tubi. If you have seen it… tell us what’s your favorite moment. And be sure to check out the soundtrack curated by King GaybyFace himself @durandbernarr. Here’s to 5 years of JOOD magic.

It means a lot to have not only been a producer of @bboybluesthefilm — but appear in one of the most quoted scenes from the movie.

The film is for the culture and streaming now on @tubi!
