FLUID BODIES (Chapter: ‘SOLIDIFYING AIR’)
Methods for Casting New Esthetics

Rupert Zallmann, Editor and the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Eds.)
Edition Angewandte, Birkhäuser Basel, 2022
ISBN: 9783035625868
Layout by Caroline Ecker and Roswitha made it happen

With contributions by:
Paul Clousier, Luca Conte, Anton Defant, Marco Dessi, Studio Stefan Diez, Anna Heimrath, Moritz Heimrath, Cathrine Hu, Ursula Klein, August Kocherscheidt, Christine König, Quirin Krumbholz, Studio Greg Lynn, Adam Orlinski, Bence Pap, Giulio Polita, Studio Klaas de Rycke, Michael Tingen, and Rupert Zallmann

Fluid Bodies presents a variety of objects made using alternative casting methods. The book documents experimental artistic research and, with numerous large-format photographs, shows innovative and surprising sculptures made of concrete and plaster, parametric designs, and the further development of conventional formwork models and casting methods: Working with hardening bodies fundamentally challenges the notion of formal rigidity, conventional formwork models are reconsidered, and a new aesthetic emerges.

The research project 'Fluid Bodies' was carried out in collaboration with Quirin Krumbholz and the team from Bollinger & Grohmann. Within the framework of the infrastructure of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, financial support was provided by the FWF.
