“Flight Dynamics” explores the Puerto Rican expression of La Brega—the struggle against adversity and injustice. In this illustration, a woman pilots a makeshift plane on a journey back to her past to process trauma, despite never being taught how. Each element carries symbolic weight: the Puerto Rican flag as her rudder, a candle as faith fueling her travel, and sneakers—symbols of cultural expression—as the wheels that land her plane. Together, they embody resilience, resourcefulness, and the will to heal.

Thank you so much to those who joined us this past Saturday for the Amy and Marcus Garvey Lecture featuring Charles Coe!
It was a gift to be present together, sitting in community and receiving the deep wisdom and truth of Charles’s words. He illuminated the work of African-American writers and poets who have shaped the struggle for justice and liberation, including figures like Phillis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, and Nikki Giovanni. Through these reflections, Charles reminded us of the enduring power of language, art, and imagination as vessels for transformation.
We are so grateful for your presence and for helping make the afternoon so meaningful.
