Introducing Maggie Adams as our 2026 CIRCA Exchange Resident! Adams is joining us as a third-year MFA candidate from the University of Iowa, with a primary emphasis in ceramics and secondary in sculpture & intermedia.

An excerpt from their artist statement: "Flesh and viscera are interchangeable with crocheted thread, clothing, clay, and hair. Through this porous materiality, the contours of what we consider part of ourselves begin to soften and expand. This is queer embodiment as I experience it, rooted in an openness to exploring productive discomfort that leads to a deeper compassion for the self, if confronted. You do not have to be queer to benefit from this inner work."

Their two-week CIRCA project kicked off with an interactive performance to generate slip and material for creating an object that will archive the intangible shared experience. During down time while waiting on drying and firings, Adams has also been playing with deconstructing an old shirt and transmuting it into a fleshy wall-hanging.

Upcoming dates to further engage with Maggie and their practice:
Artist Talk @ SDCR clay studio = Tuesday, Sept 29 @ 5pm
Pop-up Exhibition @ pH Gallery = Friday, Oct 2 @ 5-7pm

If you see Maggie in the studio this week, don't hesitate to be nosey and say hello!

I don't know exactly what it is about curating that gives me a different and much more compelling kind of rush than showing my own work does - but geeeeez what a rush. I know most of the artists I end up working with as a curator are pretty used to putting their work in shows, but I am still so humbled and grateful every time an artist trusts me with their work - trusts me to handle it with care and install it in a way that does it justice and place it in conversation with other pieces and in a narrative context that inevitably transforms the piece a bit. thank you to Maggie, Sal, Jamie, Dan and Troll for trusting me with their work, thank you to Yve for approaching me with the initial concept and wanting to work on it together, thank you to the clay studio for continuing to give me a platform to work as a curator even though that super wasn't part of my original job description, and thank you to everyone who came out to spend time with the work and add your nipples to the wall. I love getting to curate in this space that I also hang out in for 8 hours a day, meaning that I get to watch most interactions that happen between the audience and the work - it's so rewarding to watch when a specific combination of art really strikes a chord with folks. sad to kiss "at odds" goodbye, excited to keep developing the next show (I've actually got so much on the docket over the next year - stay tuned, y'all)

"...'queer' as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live."
― bell hooks

The queer body is inherently at odds with the binary systems and histories that make up what has long been the dominant cultural narrative. “At Odds” brings together the work of artists that exist and create beyond these binaries. The work in this show positions clay as body - and body as landscape, territory, archive; site of joy and discomfort, mourning and pleasure. In the act of creating, they preserve the embodied queer experience in a medium that echoes and responds to the queer bodies that handle it, in all of their depth and multiplicity.

Just a few more days to catch "At Odds" before it comes down! The gallery is open 12-5 today and Friday, and 12-3 on Saturday - and then it's on to the next show!

Mugs as Textbooks 🤎

One of our favorite visits of the year: University of Iowa students choosing mugs through the Mugs as Textbooks program.

A special thank you to the artists who have taken the extra time and effort to include a mug with their work throughout the year, making these pieces available to students at a reduced price.

And thank you to the University of Iowa faculty for continuing this collaboration with us. We love seeing young artists come into ClayAKAR, explore the work, handle the pots, look closely, ask questions, and choose a mug of their own.

A pretty good textbook, we think. ☕️

"selfform—the larger body of work these pieces belong to—is queer craft.
A self-guided program of internal inquiry and curiosity.
A potentially new-to-you state of becoming that begs for an embodied reconsideration of who and what you are.
This work absorbs, dissolves, and re-orders matter. Flesh and viscera become interchangeable with clay, clothing, plastic, and thread. Through this porous materiality, the boundaries between self and other begin to soften and expand. This is queer embodiment as I experience it, rooted in an openness to exploring productive discomfort that leads to a deeper compassion for the self if worked through. You do not have to be queer to benefit from this inner work.
The slowness and intentionality inherent to craft engenders a different temporality for us to discover these places of discomfort—to give them care, attention, and permission to exist when learning a new state of queer becoming together." - Maggie Adams

Featured pieces:
"Bespoke Wet Wipe Dispenser (no excuses)"
"Self-Cannibal No. 1 & 2"
"Nipple Grafting"

Don't miss out on "At Odds" - up at The Clay Studio of Missoula until September 26th. Gallery hours are 12-5 M-F and 12-3 Saturdays - come add your nipple grafts to the wall ✨

fun fact usually when I'm curating a show it occupies every waking thought as the install approaches and then I have an install dream where the install gods place the install plan fully formed into my head and I wake up and draw it out and it's never been wrong (except the time I dreamed that I should put all the pedestals in a horse-shoe formation in the gallery but honestly I didn't even try that idea so it may have also been the best possible install for that show and I was too close-minded to give it a chance). all that to say COME TO THIS SHOW that was installed by the gods (through me). It's a show about preserving the embodied queer experience in clay - about clay as body - and body as landscape, territory, archive; site of joy and discomfort, mourning and pleasure.
