"One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter." Henry David Thoreau

"Home is where the palm trees greet me like old friends. ... It's as if the Valley exists in an endless state of summer."

Harlingen, Texas • March 2026
Mini Robledo reunion / Mom's (early) 90th Birthday

For my entire life, I've considered Harlingen - nestled in Texas' Rio Grande Valley - a beloved second home. It's where my parents met and were married, where my Dad delivered my brother in the car on the side on the road (the whole event was newsworthy enough to make the local papers!), where my cousins and I had sleepovers and watched (and rewatched) Dirty Dancing until we could do all the dances and recite all the lines, where we ate pan dulce and Hygeia ice cream and Whataburger and drank Big Red, where my cousins and I always tried to sneak a glimpse of Grandma with her hair down (she always wore her hair up), where we almost ran out of gas driving through King Ranch, where my cousins and I played in the sand and waves at South Padre, where we took day trips to Progresso (Mexico)...I could go on and on.

Simply put, Harlingen is the backdrop for so many of my most treasured memories. Summers were sweet, time with my family was sweeter, and life seemed to stand still if only for a short time.

We've spent the last few days in the Valley celebrating Mom's upcoming 90th birthday with a mini family reunion. We were greeted at the airport with gifts and hugs, enjoyed lunch at Las Vegas Cafe and pan dulce from Lara's bakery, shopped at HEB (oh, the tortillas❤️), went sightseeing around town (family cemetery, Grandma's old house, SpaceX, Boca Chica), ate yummy pork belly and freshly caught fish at Rick & Michelle's, celebrated Mom's birthday at Longhorn Cattle Co BBQ, worshiped at Inglesia de Cristo, and shared memories, lots of laughs, a few happy tears, and all the love that distance cannot shake. What a blessing it was to look into the eyes and hug the necks of my favorite people in one of my favorite places.

Harlingen and my Robledo family are home.

“August is like the Sunday of summer.”

In my mind, I will always associate the start of a new school year with the end of summer (despite what the calendar says 😊). There's just something about the new school year that marks the close of a chapter and the beginning of a new one.

As this summer nears its end, we find ourselves happy for Diane as she enters retirement, excited for Reagan as she starts her junior year at Harding, and just so thankful to have Charlie back home. We're also missing Madison, but are pleased to know she's loving life in Chicago.

You were a good one, Summer of 2025.

Chicago • 2025

Super thankful that Maddy's new home gives us plenty of opportunities to visit the Windy City. I can't believe she's been in Chicago for 6 months now! A few days with our girl is always good for the soul. Missing her already!

Sweet Reagan is all moved in and now Searcy, Arkansas, holds a big piece of my heart. ❤️ Take care of her, Harding University. I'm counting down the days until I see her again.

She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. Prov 31:25
