Belated summer highlights: passion fruits from our vine, loving my friends in the sunshine, stonefruit season, giant bucket and other small joys amidst a very trying (read: transphobia laden) waterpolo season, growing my nans roses, starting my mail club and trying new things, being reunited with one of my all time fav colleagues, lots of time in the backyard 🍑🌞☁️💘💐🪣🌈🧪🌻🌟🌊🏀💌

RETIRED
I used to think it was a scary word - retirement. To stop something you’ve done for so long and poured everything into to. But for me, I don’t feel scared, I just feel incredibly grateful and the deepest pride.

Water polo gave me the highest highs, the hardest lessons, and a lifetime of memories.
To the Stingers who came before me, you inspired me to play with all my heart and gave me the opportunity to compete on the biggest stage.
To my teammates, coaches, staff — you carried me farther than I could ever swim alone.
To my family, you always believed in the fiercest, strongest, most relentless version of me and picked me when I didn’t quite get there.

In a lot of ways, Water Polo raised me and I grew up in the Stingers. To bring our daughter into my final campaign really was a full circle moment. Competing as a mum was the greatest challenge and the greatest honor. I hope I’ve shown Teleri — and others — what it means to chase a dream relentlessly, to fight for it, and to walk away with your head high.

Stepping away from the national team, but I’ll never be too far away from the pool. Excited for what’s next. I’ll never stop cheering on, believing in and admiring the incredible athletes who represent the Stingers.

Are you a retired athlete looking for a welcoming space to navigate life after sport?

We’d love you to join the Retired Athlete Peer Support Network, the nation’s first-ever peer-support network for retired athletes!

This six-week online initiative connects a community of retired athletes who understand the unique challenges of transitioning from elite sport.

"Transitioning from elite sport brought unique challenges, but this network provided emotional support, practical advice, and networking opportunities that helped me find my dream job in a global medical technology corporation." Madeleine Steere, former member of the Australian Women's Water Polo Team, the Stingers.

The Retired Athlete Peer Support Network forms part of a large suite of initiatives available to retired athletes which include mental health support, career support and community engagement opportunities. An Australian water polo player throws a ball in a match, with a quote by Madeleine Steere that says, 'This network ultimately changed the course of my life.'
