Seeing art manifested IRL delights us. Especially when it has Chicago ties. Angela Bassett at the Met Gala channeling Laura Wheeler Waring’s ca. 1927 painting Girl with Pink Dress. Waring was an oil portraitist & landscape artist, and the great aunt of @madelinerabb who served as the first head of what is today Chicago’s DCASE. Rarely has a Q&A been as rewarding as the one moderated last night by my wife @ebbcinemaflow at the final screening of this year’s @cinemafemme_community Short Film Festival. Five acclaimed shorts were screened in @musicboxchicago’s big theater, and as one of the film’s subjects observed, they all told distinctively American stories. Both @karinadandashi’s boisterous “Baba I’m Fine” and @reverend_mosby’s delicately nuanced “Are You Scared to be Yourself Because You Think That You Might Fail?” memorably explored parent-child relationships. @thecinechick and @mindielind’s vibrantly animated “View from the Floor” illuminated the exploitative nature of “inspiration porn,” while @luchinafisher’s winning crowd-pleaser “Team Dream” was genuinely inspiring in how it enabled its remarkable subjects to be their authentic selves. Concluding the program was @davidcutlerkreutz and @samcutlerkreutz’s shattering Oscar-nominated drama about a family torn apart by ICE. Its producer Tara Sheffer noted that she had originally seen the film as a “period piece” prior to Trump’s reelection, but now it serves as an urgent account of what is occurring at this very moment in our own city. Having Sheffer joined onstage by two of “Team Dream”’s wonderful subjects—swimming coach @soulorca and champion swimmer @madelinerabb—for the Q&A exemplified how vital cinema can be, both as a mode of uplift and a profound wake up call. Thank you to everyone who made this festival possible—including director @emily.broderick (whose birthday was celebrated last night), invaluable sponsor @saramcnairhaha (whose joy was utterly infectious) and every single audience member who joined us in honoring these essential artists.

Meet @madelinerabb 80 years young, vibrant, brilliant, and unstoppable. ✨

Besides being a talented artist, visionary, and one of the kindest, most intelligent women I know, she’s also… a swimming champion. 🏊‍♀️

💪 We work together on yoga and strength, and I’m constantly inspired by her dedication to movement, vitality, and joy.

Madeline is strong, healthy, and full of energy because she moves her body, sharpens her mind, and values the things that truly matter 🤍 connection, purpose, and doing what she loves.

If we want to get to 80 feeling anything like this incredible woman, we’d do well to follow her example.

She’s also featured in the beautiful documentary Team Dream, which follows her and her teammate Ann as they train for the National Senior Games and redefine what aging looks like. It’s a powerful story of friendship, determination, and never giving up on your goals—at any age.

I am thoroughly enjoying George Johnson's biography of what became an iconic business. As a native Chicagoan, it strikes many familiar cords, but moreso as a black child growing up with a big Afro during times of great change. His economic contributions to the black community and black business have been tremendous.
