‘Should I bring props to my senior session?’ is one of the most common questions I get! Let’s talk about it!

Here’s my photographer truth: props can be amazing... or they can be distracting. The key? They need to mean something to YOU.

Let me break down what makes a prop work (and what doesn’t):
The BEST props are things that tell your story:
* That instrument you’ve played since 4th grade
* Your sports gear (but only if you actually play!)
* Art supplies if you’re always creating
* Books if you’re a true reader
* Your letter jacket that you earned
* Dance shoes that show your passion

But here’s what I’ve learned after years of senior sessions - the props that don’t work so well are the ones that feel forced or trendy. You know, the ones you might see all over Pinterest but don’t really mean anything to you personally.

Quick story: Last year, a senior brought her grandmother’s vintage camera to our session. She’d grown up watching her grandma take photos at every family event, and it inspired her to join yearbook. THAT’S the kind of prop that makes photos magical!

Here’s my best advice: if you’re considering bringing props, ask yourself one question
‘Will this still mean something to me in 20 years?’
If the answer is yes, bring it! If you’re not sure, let’s chat about it!

Remember - you don’t NEED props to have amazing senior photos. Sometimes just being yourself in a cool Chicago location is all we need!

Want to bounce some prop ideas off me? Drop them in the comments! I’d love to hear what you’re thinking about bringing to your session!

Your Google review means the world to me!

As a photographer, I can’t tell you how much joy I feel every time I see a notification that one of my amazing seniors or their families has left a review. Each one makes my heart skip a beat, and yes, I do a little happy dance in my studio when I read them!

When you’re choosing someone to capture your senior year memories, I know how important it is to find the perfect photographer. Those photos will hang on your walls and be treasured by your family for generations. That’s why Google reviews are so valuable – they help future seniors and their families understand what it’s like to work with me and feel confident in their choice.

Unlike big portrait studios, I don’t have a massive marketing budget. What I do have is the incredible experiences I share with each senior who trusts me to capture their personality and style. Your reviews help tell that story to others who are searching for their perfect senior photographer.

When you write about how comfortable you felt during your session, how we found the perfect locations to match your vision, or how the photos made you feel confident and beautiful – those words help other seniors imagine their own experience with me. Your detailed reviews about the planning process, the shoot itself, and how much you loved your final images give future clients a real glimpse into what makes a Shalimar B Photography session special.

Running a photography business isn’t just about taking pretty pictures. It’s about creating an unforgettable experience for each senior. Sometimes after a long day of editing, I’ll read through my reviews, and they remind me exactly why I fell in love with senior photography.

So if you’ve had your senior photos taken with me, consider taking a few minutes to share your experience on Google. What made you choose me? How did you feel during your session? What was your favorite part of the experience?

And to all my amazing seniors who have already left reviews – thank you from the bottom of my heart. Each one means so much to me, and I read and appreciate every single one. You’re helping other seniors discover and trust me with their memories.
