A timber building in Madrid where every family designed its own home.

Our-Shelves Houses is a cooperative of eight homes by SUMA Arquitectura, the practice of Elena Orte and Guillermo Sevillano. The structure is cross-laminated timber, and the pieces of the façade, which are structure too, reach inwards to become shelves, desks, benches and wardrobes. Hence the name. The floors are staggered by half a storey, so every home has a garden or a terrace, and each member of the cooperative decided how to live within that shared frame: no two homes are alike.

I photographed it at three moments: under construction in 2019 and 2021, and finished and lived in at the end of 2022. The carousel also walks through SUMA Studio&Home, the architects' own studio and home within the same complex, and between the photographs are three of their drawings showing how the eight homes fit together.

Have a lovely Saturday.

THE SOUND OF INDUSTRIALIZATION

What does industrialized construction sound like?

For L31, the CLT structure was assembled in just three days, within the narrow streets of a Mediterranean historic town.

A precisely designed and prefabricated system transforms not only the way we build, but also the impact of construction on its surroundings.

Less noise.
Less waste.
Less disruption.

In a context where everyday life continues just a few metres from the building site, silence becomes another form of sustainability.
