CAPTION: I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT’S TRUE

Still processing the heavy, heartbreaking, incredible experience of playing Bruce Bechdel in FUN HOME. Extremely proud of the work, in a way I’m not always used to feeling. Extremely lucky to have been surrounded by a loving, collaborative group of actors, creatives, and stage managers @hangartheatre who made it possible to explore, to make mistakes, to fail and get back up again (though never to fall, #nofallfriday), all in the service of honoring this transcendent piece of art and the real lives behind the words and music.

Accomplished what I set out to do- pushed myself, scared myself, pulled from teachers and lessons and experiences I built up over the years to find a way inside this complicated character.

This is just one small thing, but I’ve never had to play the piano onstage while also playing a real scene: this has never been asked of me before and it became a joyous moment I always looked forward to. This was a comfortable environment in which we could all be uncomfortable and just figure it all out. “Major” credit to the Hangar for programming this one-of-a-kind show, and during Pride Month no less.

Memorial Day invites us to pause and to hold space for remembrance — of those who served, of those we’ve lost, and of communities that keep finding ways to come together. Dance has always been one of those ways: a reminder that we are here, that being here matters, and that we can focus on what we’re building with the time we have. This is certainly what happened this past week as DGDC put in a robust rehearsal week, creating art, cementing community, taking care of each other. Gathering together is an act of joy and affirmation. We’re grateful to continue making and sharing this work with you.
