If you choose to experience this for yourself, please make sure to book with an ethical operator like @_heyorca_ or @behindthemasktravel
We have an ocean biologist on board, we don’t chase, we stay longer than one day, we don’t interrupt and always keep a respectful distance and let the orcas come to us if they feel like it.
The animal’s welfare is ALWAYS priority number one and comes above pretty insta shots or once in a life time human encounters
If we want to preserve our planet, we HAVE TO put our wishes second, afterall we are the biggest predators on earth. Please please please don’t let them pay the price they didn’t sign up for ♥️

// Friluftsliv (Norwegian; fr’i:lʉftsliːʋ) is the idea of ‘open-air living’, which was first popularised in the 1850s by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, who describes the importance in Norway of making the most of life in nature; the fulfilment of both body and soul when immersed in life outdoors. //

It’s been a solid minute since I’ve written anything that wasn’t about international development or content for yet another UN day. So it was nice to dip back into the travel writing waters for a piece about swimming with orcas in northern Norway, for @getlostmagazine ‘s relaunch of its much-loved print edition. 🫍

Big cheers again to team @immersiafreediving @_heyorca_ for putting on such an extraordinary adventure, and @jamo_gets_lost @kate_gazzard for the opportunity to put some words and pictures on shiny 150gsm and making them look so nice.

It begins with little flashes.
A couple of small grey fish scales, no bigger than five-cent coins, glinting in the dark water in front of me. Within a minute, there’s hundreds drifting around me.
Half a fish - a herring - torn in half, soon floats nearby. It’s just a head, and a roughly-torn top of a body, bobbing on the surface.
Then, I get a glimpse of white in the middle distance. It is only relatively a small spot in the context of the vast dark green in front of me, yet this white is unmistakable, as it’s followed soon by what I see is the outline of a tail. It’s an orca, at least four metres long, and it’s here; cruising calmly by.
Within minutes, there’s two, then three, four, five orcas moving back and forth. In front, behind, underneath. They’re moving at a steady speed, as a family, taking no notice of me or the others with me in the water.
The orcas move alongside the bait ball and the bait ball moves with them, before the orcas make sudden, deliberate direction changes that stun and break the herrings’ uniformity. Most herring get away, but each time a few don’t, and another haze of fish scales hits the water in front of us.
Inevitably, a small voice of fear pops briefly into my own head. One that, despite my standard bravado, reminds me that these are apex predators of the ocean world, and that I’m h
