As someone trying to build a community where we encourage authenticity through lived experiences, I was so overjoyed when @boldblindbeauty reached out to feature me.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜? Representation. The blind and visually impaired community needs more of it just about everywhere from general employment to the beauty industry to in recreation. The article also talks about how February is Low Vision Awareness Month. Specific to me, February is Retinitis Pigmentosa Awareness Month, which I will be posting about sometime before March. Everything I do in my personal life, professional life, and with my social media presence is to use my experiences as a visually impaired woman to encourage, advocate for, and educate both persons with and without disabilities to reach whatever goals they set for themselves and push past (or skate through) any barriers set in their way.

We're back!! We know we've been absent since the beginning of this crazy year, but we never thought we'd be taking mask selfies together.
How are all of you holding up during this qauran-time? We're planning our wedding, developing professionally, and being grateful that we can be stuck inside with just each other without losing our minds. This was NOT always the case. Back in Mady's UC Davis days, we spent three weeks in the deserted college town with nothing to do, and by the end of week two, well it was a liiiiiiiittle tense for us. It's really important that you spend time together and go on a quarantine date but also take time to do your separate hobbies so that you don't feel like you've been together 24/7. Mady knows she's grateful to have Armando around to help her navigate the pandemic. Hope you all are doing well and have a wonderful, smoke-filled Sunday.

Meet Mady!
•
I was diagnosed with RP at the age of two, and have lived with the condition ever since. I, like most others with RP, am essentially completely night blind and have terrible depth perception. Unlike the common characteristic of losing your peripheral vision, I find it more difficult to focus on objects directly in front of me. My eyes move around ALOT to focus, and I blink OFTEN because of a side condition alongside RP called nystagmus, where your eyes shake. I was blessed 12 years ago to have my vision stabilize for the time being, but while my visual acuity hasn't changed much, other surrounding factors have. I'm always reminded through some funny and some serious blind moments that the vision I've retained can change at any point in time. There are, without a doubt, some frustrating parts of being a visually disabled woman I have learned to live with, but for the most part, it's shaped me into the person I am today. There are many experiences and life events I wouldn't trade for the world that wouldn't have happened without my disability. RP is part of my life, my story, my journey, and I want nothing more than to raise awareness of what I and others who share the condition are capable of. That way people won't see my cane and gasp. That way we can live in a more open minded, accepting, accessible, and equal society.
