A year ago today was one of the scariest days of my life. My “cancer journey” started over a year prior and lasted another 9ish months after, but I am proud to feel like a (mostly) fully functioning human again, and still so immensely thankful for the community of friends and chosen family who stepped up to support, love, and care for me throughout that entire time. 🥹🫶🏻 I remember lying in bed all fuzzy on meds in my own ICU, with my coworkers taking the best care of me, wondering what life might feel like a year down the road. Recovery was hard, with months of pain, limited mobility, and more procedures after this one, but life still moved forward and now here we are. 🥹 Onward and upward, I guess. 🥹✨

Thanks to @maemaemia for directing an impromptu promo shoot and taking lots of media of my performance yesterday at @danelectros!🤗 I had a blast singing and dancing all day & night with new friends and old at the Candlelghters fundraiser! It was awesome to see and be part of such an outpouring of support and community!!🥲

Music can be reconstructed from the auditory cortex, yet the precise neural dynamics underlying music perception remain unknown.

A new study analyzed a unique intracranial electroencephalography dataset of 29 neurosurgical patients passively listened to the popular rock song Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1 by #PinkFloyd while their neural activity was recorded from a total of 2,668 electrodes directly lying on their cortical surface. Then, the auditory spectrogram of the song stimulus was reconstructed from the elicited high-frequency activity using a regression approach.

Music perception relies on a broad network of subcortical and cortical regions, including primary and secondary auditory cortices, sensorimotor areas, and inferior frontal gyri. Despite extensive overlap with the speech perception network, some brain regions of the temporal and frontal lobes are preferentially activated during music perception.

A recognizable song was successfully reconstructed from direct neural recordings and quantified the impact of different factors on decoding accuracy. Meaning- that music perception relied on both hemispheres, with a preference for the right hemisphere.

Overall, these findings further our understanding of the neural dynamics underlying music perception along with paving the way for adding musical elements to brain–computer interface applications to assist individuals with auditory processing disorders.

Pretty cool times at the Music in Healthcare Symposium at Houston Methodist Research Institute yesterday!! 🤩 It’s always nice to learn from and engage with other creative arts therapists & healthcare professionals, but it was extra special to learn from my own teammates & colleagues, and to connect with so many old and new friends who traveled from afar to join us!! 😍 Proud of y’all who presented, and thankful to be doing what we’re doing 🤩🫶🏻
