Trip down memory lane - the values of my curatorial practice are deeply rooted in my experience living in Aotearoa. When I turned 18 I moved back to New Zealand and started my own business as a public art curator and cultural producer. I was so lucky to be mentored by #BarabraHolloway and @oltrustola who always challenged me to stay focused on providing safe, PAID platforms for artists, especially those not represented by galleries or in mainstream culture, to push their creative boundaries in public spaces as a way of interrupting people’s 9 to 5 grind, to awaken the public imagination, and to build a community woven together by artists and cultural producers. It was during this time that I began asking the important questions of who gets access to public space and why and how to disrupt the link between public art and gentrification. Ultimately these questions led me to take a step back from my work in New Zealand and invest in a masters degree (@nyuartspolitics) that allowed me the space to think more critically about how art can be used as a tool to shift culture and change public policy. Who knew one week after graduating I would be scouted to help bring @amplifierart to life? This artwork called "Hine" by @owendippie was created using only spray paint! It lives on as a four story high mural facing onto the only major motorway running through the country. This was the last public mural I helped produce before leaving New Zealand and so so grateful for the opportunity to be apart of Owen’s creative process. Missing and sending love to my NZ fam and feeling so grateful for my roots 💕
