It’s P.A.N.D.A.S / P.A.N.S Awareness Day! I was diagnosed with P.A.N.D.A.S (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal infections) when I was nine years old. P.A.N.D.A.S causes an autoimmune response where the brain attacks itself, which can cause tics and behavioral changes practically overnight. For me, I developed anxiety and couldn’t stop rolling my neck, twitching my thumbs, and hard-blinking my eyes, like a bad itch. Thankfully, tics, anxiety, and unusual fears were about all for me, but in other cases, P.A.N.D.A.S can be a lot more serious, causing cognitive and physical difficulties that are life altering. I’m so grateful to my doctor who recognized P.A.N.D.A.S in my sister and I right away, and referred us to specialists who could help, and to my family for doing the crucial research and supporting me (it was not always easy living in a household with an incredibly fearful 9-year old) I’m sharing my story to spread awareness about P.A.N.D.A.S, as it is commonly misdiagnosed and not treated correctly. These days, Maggie’s and my P.A.N.D.A.S symptoms are very mild and only flare up every now and then. Thank you for reading, friends! Hopefully you learned a little bit about P.A.N.D.A.S / P.A.N.S today!

It’s my 🎉PEAK IMMUNITY DAY!!🎉 (last Thursday!!)
I have waited
1 year or
15 months or
66 weeks or
459 days or
10,992 hours or
659,521 minutes
to hug my friends again, to go to the rink, a clothing store, mingle with neighbors, and walk past people without holding my breath. Ok, that wasn’t necessary but I couldn’t help it. 😂 The first step for me is not opening the door with my foot...I’ll get there😁 I’m so grateful to all the health care workers, scientists, and social distancers for doing above and beyond their part! I’m also super duper grateful that my family was able to quarantine to the level that we did. Theater, friends, rink and hugs, here I come!!! 🎶😄🎉
