ad to put up a better self portrait of myself and my hat in my @medaltaartists studio space I was gifted this cowboy hat from my lovely table mate, amazing artist and cowgirl 🤠 @laurie.i.steinbach from last years stampede. The hat was from her husband who used to compete in the stampedes years ago. Laurie told us all the things we wanted to know about rodeoing and we had a really fun time.

This was truly the highlight of my summer after grinding away the MFA summer term lol

Some of the nicest and deeply weird and talented people I’ve met. Weird being a compliment in my book. @medalta

So today was my first day of a year long residency @medaltaartists @medalta in #medicinehat #alberta where I was singled out to volunteer by @tomospots lol (Tomo is really gonna hate I said this haha) for to start of the artist takeover.

It’s been three months since I’ve touched clay; since finishing the MFA at @albertauarts ; glad to be back here where I got to work with @magiclanterns #sharryboyle workshop last summer. medalta is sort of a magical place. Wild life everywhere, so much sun and really amazing arts community to boot.

I thought I’d post a work I did back a while ago where I was working with a #collage like composition using digital painting, oil painting, photography and ceramics sculpture in a piece.

For myself I usually start working on sketches, and the art works either become part of the process or lead me to think through ideas of other works. My work sometimes crosses many different mediums trying to get at ideas out in different way, theories, or just making sense of things through the act of creating.

This particular piece is a pastiche of working between these mediums in a surrealistic way, to think about space, colour, #sculpture and what happens when they combine to to create a new place that couldn’t have existed outside of the confines on the end medium. I love looking at and analyzing what is valued and what is un-valued in art which intimately relate to my body, the disabled body in society, while contemplating what those things mean to me and others and how they are expressed in our realities. This tension between mediums, thoughts and reflexive thinking is the point I look for in any work.

We are taking a closer look at each work in the exhibition ‘New Neighbours’ in its final week. Today we are highlighting ‘Scarborough Mirror,’ by Shary Boyle.

‘New Neighbours’ presents a selection of recent acquisitions to the Doris McCarthy Gallery Collection. Living as an evolving, expansive neighbourhood of public art throughout our campus, the Collection offers unexpected discoveries and connections between artworks and their environments. ‘New Neighbours’ showcases artists who are connected to Scarborough, or whose work reflects its vibrant communities; their unique voices broaden our self-awareness and reflect the spirit of our campus as a place of belonging.

Commissioned for the DMG, Boyle’s self-portrait uses symbolism to explore the artist’s sense of her role and creative practice, imbued with her relationship with her hometown of Scarborough. Locating herself on the edge of the Scarborough Bluffs, Boyle is holding a sprig of Lily of the Valley to her nose. The common flower is associated with renewal and hope. Her extraordinary ears are those of a bat, granting her the ability to echolocate. Given a bat’s unique power to understand their sense of place, ‘Scarborough Mirror’ suggests the heightened ability that artists possess to observe and articulate their worlds.

‘New Neighbours’ is curated by Julia Abraham and runs to August 30, 2026 in the Doris McCarthy Gallery Vitrines at U of T Scarborough.

Patel Brown is proud to announce the acquisition of works by Muriel Ahmarani Jaouich, Shary Boyle and Marigold Santos into the Doris McCarthy Collection.

These works are on view in the Doris McCarthy Gallery vitrines as part of the group exhibition New Neighbours: Collection in Focus curated by Julia Abraham.

“This ever-growing network of artists invites us to consider the importance of kinship, optimism, and sense of place through relational accountability within our local suburban context.”

Congratulations to the DMG and the artists on these important acquisitions, which will “preserve and ensure access to works by significant Canadian and international artists while stimulating conversations around the formal and perceptual boundaries of contemporary art practice.”

Hi everyone! Just wanted to share something I’ve been working on recently, that I’ve been kinda shy about on my page ☺️

This year on January 1st, with the love and care of many, myself and an incredible board of directors opened the artist-run nonprofit @capsulesstudio in the Bathurst and Dupont Neighbourhood. We were able to take the place of Space Unltd as it unfortunately closed - and by mixing many revenue streams, and a few art angels flying around us! the space began to take its first form: a pilot space to prove a new type of artist run centre no longer fully dependant on the grant system. What we wanted to highlight is that by making the resources and skills of a few available to the many, careers, security and stability for artists, and most importantly community, begin to move forward and make cities beautiful and interesting to be in. And a stronger foundation begins to show itself.

As a dedicated maker and advocate for the importance of creative lives in the fabric of cities, I brought something up to @gutflora_ about 4 years ago needing their help (and great knowledge) to develop it into an idea. I realized we would need to urgently work on this change when curators and directors starting travelling to visit my studio, and finding me without, or moving from place to place, or making my work in holes, with flooding, pests, or electricity and water cutoffs in different places around Toronto. Then the big studio providers started to close.

My team to move this project is and has been, so patient and incredible. I do realize how lucky I am. It is still on the way to perfect and we work every day to make it better. There have been so many thoughtful and game-changing donations to our tool library, and allies for access to making coming out of the woodwork (ha!).

The studio is now full with a waitlist, and we provide free (or close to free!) programming and skillbuilding by and for artists all year long. We have just begun our summer series of programming, inside a beautiful interactive installation so go have a look!

If you would like to chat more about Capsules, work with us, or support us, give us a shout at capsules.office@gmail.com

Sappy Fest , where swamp dreams align. Not a big picture person when enjoying the moments, of which there were many.

While leaving the National Gallery of Canada, Carol and I were startled to see what seemed to be a dark figure straddling a beam high up toward the ceiling. On the wall just below this appartion was a description saying this was a sculpture by one Canada's leading young ceramicist/sculptors, Shary Boyle.

The creature has dark metallic skin and hair, long dangling toes and three arms clutching brightly coloured ropes swooping up to the ceiling. Its fierce eyes looked angry at our presence. We loved it!
