Today, we are proud to welcome @dowsersnc to the Gar Hole family. Dowsers is a new North Carolina / Illinois supergroup made up of members of Magic Tuber Stringband, Weirs, Fust, Beak Trio, Alli Bois, and our very own Austin Cash. Formed around a body of songs collected, written, and arranged by Evan Morgan of Magic Tuber, the music of Dowsers seeks to bend the old world towards the new, with original songs and instrumental compositions entangled with ballads and fiddle tunes of old. It is a thrilling body of work which we are very excited to begin sharing with you now.

The bands first release, a double single, is out now. Link in bio to listen. On one end, “Dogwood” is a somber meditation on various cycles of change, relating all to the changing colors of dogwood flowers. On the other, “Three Forks of Cheat” transforms an Edden Hammons fiddle tune into an epic post-rock headbanger with distorted guitars and shrieking fiddle.

Full album will be out spring 2027

Dowsers is Courtney Werner & Evan Morgan (Magic Tuber Stringband, Weirs), Austin Cash (solo artist, Austin Cash & Nathan Smearage), Oliver Child-Lanning (Weirs, Sluice, Fust), James Gibian (Beak Trio), and Alli Rogers (Alli Blois).

Horse Lords were founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 2010; they evolved from the experimental collective Teeth Mountain and began as a trio with drummer Sam Haberman, guitarist Owen Gardner, and bassist Max Eilbacher, soon adding alto saxophonist Andrew Bernstein to the core ensemble. Though Horse Lords grew out of the fertile Baltimore noise and leftfield rock scene, a storied environment for artists and weirdos that has nurtured many an influential outsider band (Lungfish, Matmos), their approach is more omnivorous than the stippled rhythms of instrumental electric rock would indicate.

Mesmerizing, spectral, rustic, immersive, and beautifully strange Appalachian string music rooted in tradition but pushing into something entirely of its own. 🌲
