@ivanoska.hristina Flesh, 2026 wallpaper, recurring pattern, digitally edited from several cut-outs Commissioned by the evn collection, 2026. @evnsammlung 🌸 First presented in the exhibition Tapeti, Skopje, 2026 This wallpaper emerges from Ivanoska’s ongoing project Flesh into Blossom (2024–), inspired by her engagement with the South Eastern European folkloric figure of the Samovila and the writings of Donna Haraway, particularly A Cyborg Manifesto and Staying with the Trouble. Reimagined through a contemporary lens, the Samovila appears as a speculative hybrid being that resonates with Haraway’s understanding of the cyborg as a figure that unsettles established boundaries between human, animal, and technology. For Flesh, Ivanoska employs her non-binary alphabet Archetype Open Form, a visual language that rejects conventional hierarchies of vertical and horizontal structures. Letters are constructed through circles, semicircles, and diagonal forms, deliberately resisting immediate legibility and opening space for ambiguity, imagination, and multiple interpretations. The work is also rooted in the artist’s daily walks through Skopje City Park, where observations of seasonal change, growth, and ecological interdependence become a source of reflection. A recurring motif within the composition is the woodpecker. Initially encountered through sound rather than sight, the bird evolved into a central visual element, embodying vitality, rhythm, and the living pulse of urban nature. Surrounded by mushrooms and willow branches, it inhabits a fragile ecosystem in which signs of regeneration coexist with subtle traces of vulnerability and potential loss. Balancing ornamental, floral, and organic forms with the almost documentary presence of the bird, Flesh creates a poetic tension between imagination and observation. Characteristic of Ivanoska’s socially engaged and introspective practice, the wallpaper transforms everyday encounters into a layered visual narrative. Text: Heike Maier-Rieper @maierrieperh

Please join us for a book presentation on Friday, 26 September, 6 pm at Charim, Dorotheergasse 12

Markus Krottendorfer will discuss his publications with Christian Egger and Heike Maier-Rieper (in German), followed by Scott Clifford Evans reading an excerpt of his text from Eyes of the Night (in English).

The books will be available for sale at the gallery.

Terminal
Markus Krottendorfer
Text: Christian Egger
Graphic Design: Christian Bretter
Softcover, 128 pages, German
FOTOHOF, 2024

"Krottendorfer is interested in the foundations of our modernity and present, in the traces of fictions and mythologies and the conflicts between rationality and irrational desire, which could still be virulent at the core of our societies. He always finds special places where traces of strange and contradictory (historical) world designs can be found or places where questions about the effectiveness or their (former) utopian potentials can be asked. In this book, the closed Athens Ellinikon Airport becomes the setting for his photographic and performative examination of the (architectural) remnants of ideologies that were formative until the 1960s." - Reinhard Braun

Eyes of the Night
Scott Clifford Evans - Markus Krottendorfer
Text: Scott Clifford Evans
Foreword: Brigitte Huck
Editor-in-Chief: Heike Maier-Rieper
Graphic Design: Christian Bretter
Hardcover, 176 pages, English & German
VfmK, 2025

A book like a high-wire act – balancing between truth and deception, documentation and fiction, trash and the grotesque. In their joint publication, American filmmaker Scott Clifford Evans and Austrian photographer Markus Krottendorfer intertwine their artistic approaches to create a multifaceted narrative world that merges cinema, photography, and literature. The starting point is Krottendorfer's fascinating photo series on the EVN power plants.

In Kay Walkowiakʼs film „Stimuli“, egret monkeys are confronted with minimalistic objects. They gnaw on the blue, grey, or pink colored boards, use them as playthings, turn or rotate them, or flee with their pickings. “The viewer,” writes Walkowiak, “can observe how they cautiously approach the four different minimalistically painted, flat colored objects and also how they immediately and instinctively take possession of the works.” Traditionally, minimalism is seen as a means to achieve distance. The aesthetic of reduction seems to touch on rationality and an aptitude for analysis, which is why these types of art are held to be contrary to immediate and carefree experience. And yet the monkeyʼs naive interaction with the material shows us otherwise.

In the film ‘Stimuli’ by Kay Walkowiak, monkeys - macaques to be precise - encounter abstract art in the form of four flat objects. The objects look like De Stijl and at the same time fit naturally into the location of the macaques, here between brickwork, niches, stone and earth. Do the monkeys stimulate viewers to put aside their acquired distance from art? Or are the monkeys stimulated by the art? With his precise dramaturgy and formal language, Walkowiak weaves sculptures and film into a new texture that is both haptic and narrative. Culture and nature interact and become a new dimension.
