In early August, the PLA Daily published an article about camo cos from several PLAA’s CABs conducting exs in which they employed techniques/systs to conceal command nodes/other pos from obs by recon units. The exs consisted of pers using various kinds of camo netting/other systs as they built command posts/staging areas in all types of weather. The cos also conducted exs that used smoke generators to hide landing sites/other locs. The units also built arty pos/other sites that mimicked the layouts that bdes would use. The cos relied on weather equip/drones to determine if techniques/systs used were effective. The training teams also took lessons from previous exs/incorp them into SOPs for camouflaging/concealing sites. The lessons included conducting coord exs with recon units, increasing profic with new equip, and researching how to counter techniques from an enemy’s perspective.

The exs illustrate the significant emph that the PLAA places on using camo/concealment to increase their CABs’ survivability/leverage surprise during combat ops. The PLAA has long understood the importance of camo/deception, which is why CABs have cos under their op support bns/separate units at the GA/TC lvls. This cap enhances the unit’s survivability by complicating collection efforts to locate pos. For instance, the units would use systs that would mimic the EM/heat sigs of pltf assocd with actual pos to attract the attention of ISR assets. The cos’ deception caps also extend to hiding convoys during scheduled halts/reach staging areas. The PLA also uses camo caps to leverage surprise when planning/conducting ops.

The incorp of new tech/systs shows how the cos are enhancing their ability to use camo techniques as well as to adapt to new ISR threats. The cos incorp new systs such as multispectral smoke generators/netting that decreased IR/other sigs because of shortcomings encountered. The cos also increased use of systs that mimicked the sigs/layouts of weapons that the PLAA use. Additionally, the cos developed CMs by conducting joint exs with recon units/completed research on how opposing forces would use ISR systs.

Chinese state outlets released media in the days leading up to the 90th anniversary of the Long March. One segment discussed the Red Army’s crossing the Chishui River during the Long March/the elementary that was built near the site. Several officers/sailors from the PLAN Jianggezhuang Naval Base visited the school to meet with the students/tell them about their service. One sailor stated that the unit commissioned new equip/that they were launched one after the other. The sailor also stated the unit operated with “new forces,” constantly expanding patrols to distant locs, and setting new records, such as the longest submerged voyage. An article was publd about the Long March families of nuclear subs/rockets’ dev history. A 3rd-gen sub, likely the Type 094A, conducted the test of the JL-3 SBLM in July 2026. Media publd in mid-October indicated that Bohai Shipyard will likely launch the 1st Type 096 sub by the end of 2026/early 2027 while continuing to build Type 095s.

The media indicate that the PLAN has commissioned all Type 093B nuclear attack subs into service, which would significantly increase their UW/long-range strike caps. The subs would enhance the PLAN’s UW caps because of its ability to more effectively use Yu-9/Yu-10 torpedoes compared to the Type 093/093A. Additionally, the Type 093B would likely have enhanced active/passive sonars that would allow the subs to detect/track underwater/surface targets more efficiently. The Type 093B’s increased endce is likely its most significant char because the PLAN now has a long-range strike cap deployed for longer periods. The PLAN would commission the first Type 096 by 2027 or 2028, which would replace the retired Type 092/complement the Type 094/094As. The Type 095 sub would enhance the PLAN’s UW, long-range strike, and endce caps because of the tech used in its dev. Specifically, the Type 095 is projected to have 8 tubes that can be used to launch Yu-9, Yu-10, and future torpedoes as well as a VLS to launch YJ-18C/other missiles. The sub would also have a reduced acoustic signature because of the noise reduction materials/tech used in its construction.

The PLAN is currently developing the ability to employ various drones to enhance its capacity to conduct coordinated manned-unmanned operations in various domains. The operations include using UAVs to increase the PLAN’s aerial reconnaissance and intelligence collection capabilities during various missions.

In late September, a Southern Theater Command-based PLAN SMA regiment conducted an exercise that involved a KJ-500H AEW&C airplane and several reconnaissance drones, such as the WZ-7 and BZK-005. The KJ-500H’s aircrew used a terminal to establish a communication network link called Sky Net to share information between sea- and air-based units. The link enabled the crew and the drones to create a reconnaissance formation surrounding the “high-altitude, wide-area surveillance and low-altitude, close-range support” concept. The concept allowed the KJ-500H and the drones to employ an operational chain that used “high-altitude networked guidance by SMA, forward-deployed close-range reconnaissance by drones, and round-the-clock coordinated response across multiple platforms.”

The exercise demonstrates how the PLAN is developing the capabilities to use drones to conduct different types of reconnaissance as well as to locate targets during combat operations. Additionally, the exercise illustrates how the PLAN would use drones as key enablers that would act as connectors between different domains and operational levels. The PLAN’s use of UAVs during its AEW&C operations illustrates how the branch is implementing the Systems Warfare concept at the tactical level.

The PLAA adaptation of new equipment, such as anti-tank guided missiles (ATMG) allows the branch to increase its combat capabilities as well as to incorporate technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data.

In mid-September 2026, 24 PLAA soldiers from a combined arms brigade participated in on-site training for the HJ-13 (commonly referred to as the Red Arrow-13) ATGM at a Norinco plant, a major Chinese state–owned defense and manufacturing conglomerate. The ATGM system mentioned in the article is likely the HJ-13, based on the similarities between its missile rack and that of its export variant, the HJ-13E.

The HJ-13 would provide medium combined arms and light combined arms brigades with the ability to employ ATGMs with non-line-of-sight (NLOS) guidance to destroy tanks and other targets. The ATGM also indicates that the PLA developed a network that allows units to control the missile and to guide it to specific targets.
