This is The Art of Gifting.

The art of ambient lighting

Ambient lighting is the quiet architecture of a space. Soft and diffused, it is meant to be felt more than seen. From japanese paper lanterns to mid century lamps, it has always been about atmosphere, not brightness.

Warm, low level lighting has been shown to reduce stress and help the body relax by lowering cortisol levels. It also supports melatonin production, which helps regulate sleep, while harsh overhead lighting can do the opposite and keep your brain alert. Studies have found that softer lighting can even make people feel more comfortable, open, and willing to stay longer in a space.

The art of ambient lighting is really the art of feeling. A subtle way to shape how you exist in a room.

Open shelves can feel tricky, but order is easier than you think. 🤍

Start by grouping similar items together – books, plants, vinyl, or décor. Play with height and layering: stack some books horizontally, lean art or photos against the back, and let smaller items fill the gaps. Balance busy cubes with some breathing room to keep it calm and airy.

With a little intention, your cubes can be both functional and beautiful. Order, made easy. ✨

Inspired by @maisonbymia to gift this No Face piggy bank to Derk for Christmas. You would not directly image it, but it looked really cool in her interior! When Derk and I were just together we watched a lot of Studio Ghibli movies and thought this would be a nice and funny gift. ✨

Shelf goals start here. 🧡
Whether you’re team minimal or maximal, a few styling basics go a long way:

✨ Vary heights for visual interest
📚 Stack books horizontally and vertically
🕯 Add personal touches: candles, ceramics, or a framed print
🌿 Let a bit of green do its thing
📦 Give one cube some breathing room. Adding only a single small object can make the whole setup feel lighter
🖼 Use your shelf like a mini gallery – lean prints or photos instead of hanging them

The best part? With a modular setup, nothing’s permanent. Rearrange as often as your mood (or the seasons) change.
