5 things I commonly see missing from high school S&C programs:

• Unilateral training
• Medicine ball work
• Structured speed + aerobic work
• Tracking metrics beyond the barbell
• Isometrics for strength and tendon health

The goal is to prepare these athletes holistically.

It’s to make sure we’re actually developing the qualities athletes need to perform, stay healthy, and transfer what they gain in the weight room to their sport.

In order to best prepare football athletes for the demands of the sport, we first have to understand what those demands actually are. It’s not enough to simply train or chase fatigue.

These are some of the most common mistakes that lead to unnecessary preseason aggravations, poor preparation, and wasted training time.

Football season is near, prepare accordingly.

The weight room should make you a better athlete, not just a better lifter. Every exercise needs a purpose and every session should move performance forward.

Heavy loads should be a staple for athletes. Low repetition strength training builds force production, recruits high threshold motor units, and develops the strength needed to produce faster, more explosive movement.

Medicine ball throws, loaded and unloaded jumps, sprinting, and unilateral strength work help athletes express that strength that’s most relevant to sport.

Track your progress. If you aren’t measuring meaningful improvements, you’re guessing. Objective data should guide every programming decision.

Follow a system. Athletes need progression, purpose, and consistency. Random workouts may make you tired, but they rarely make you better.
