Inside the private Majlis Suite at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, HH Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum and Tashkeel have curated a stunning collection of works with artists that bring together the rich heritage of the UAE with a contemporary focus. It was an honour to photograph these pieces during my time in the UAE. @mo_hotels @mo_jumeira @lateefam @tashkeelstudio

A bit of a back story 😎. . .

I've always been in awe of how @lateefam and @tashkeelstudio have been such an important part of the UAE arts scene. Seeing, and photographing the stunning work by @maithademithan (who uses a scanography technique), was particularly special.
I first saw Maitha developing her work more than 10 years ago at Tashkeel when I was a member, just finding my feet as an artist / photographer. (I was fresh out of university and returning to the UAE - the place I was born). The arts scene was small and I noticed her work in the studio, it was captivating. To finally see it hanging in a commercial setting and photographing it felt like a real full-circle moment.

What a lovely project to be part of 🌹

Honouring a legacy that continues to give across generations, the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Dubai and Tashkeel, unveils ‘Al Amanah’ — a powerful mural inspired by the life and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. With concept and design by Emirati artist Maitha Demithan, and brought to life by Croatian portrait artist Lonac, the artwork reflects themes of generosity and resilience. Like a seed planted with purpose, its impact continues to grow, echoing the spirit of our Founding Father and the nation he nurtured. Part of Dubai Culture’s Public Art Strategy, this initiative transforms public space into a living tribute to heritage, identity, and shared values.

💙BLUE 💙
Cobalt blue has long been the quiet strength on the artist’s palette -a color both ancient and modern, sacred and precise. First forged in fire by Persian artisans and later refined in 19th-century Europe,
it arrived as a gift to painters: a blue that did not fade,
did not muddy, did not yield.
Where ultramarine was rich and spiritual, cobalt was cerebral —
a cooler flame, a steady light.
Van Gogh turned to it for the swirling heavens of Starry Night,
Monet found in it the shimmer of reflected skies, and Matisse used it to cut boldly into space — not as background, but as presence.
Unlike fleeting pigments that lose their brilliance to time,
cobalt endures, unwavering, holding its blue with quiet defiance.
In frescoes, oils, and watercolors, it gives form to stillness,
brings clarity to shadow,
and lends a noble restraint to emotion.
Artists choose cobait bly ot to dazzle, but to anchor.
