Universal Music Group has taken its fight against AI-generated “slop” and copyright infringement to court, filing a federal lawsuit against DistroKid in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

UMG Recordings, Capitol Records and Capitol CMG are suing DistroKid, Kid Distro Holdings and DK Holdco for “deceptive trade practices and copyright infringement,” alleging that the distributor’s rapid growth has been fueled by practices that undermine artists and legitimate rights-holders.

The complaint takes particular aim at what UMG describes as DistroKid’s role in flooding digital services with mass-generated AI content and infringing recordings. UMG alleges that DistroKid presents itself as a distributor of legitimate, artist-backed releases while in reality allowing “AI-generated ‘slop’” and other bad-actor content onto platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, TikTok, Meta and others.

According to the complaint, DistroKid claims to distribute music “10-20x faster than any other distributor,” placing tens of thousands of tracks and albums on digital services every day and accounting for 30-40% of newly distributed music. UMG argues that scale comes at a cost when the material being distributed isn't actually backed by artists or legitimately owned.
