🤟 Makaton Sign of the Week: HALLOWEEN 🎃

Halloween can be exciting, but for some autistic children and young people the noise, lights, costumes and changes to routine can feel overwhelming.

Here are some simple ways to make Halloween more enjoyable:

🧡 Create your own Halloween fun at home
👕 Choose comfortable costumes (they don’t have to be scary!)
🍬 Enjoy treats without the pressure of trick-or-treating
🏠 Visit familiar houses or plan ahead where possible
🎃 Enjoy low-key activities such as pumpkin carving, crafts or a favourite Halloween film
💬 Talk about plans in advance and involve your child in decisions

Remember, every autistic person is different. A little planning and flexibility can help make Halloween a positive experience for everyone.

💬 What does total communication look like in practice?

In our provision, communication is embedded throughout the whole day. 🤍

From high-tech and low-tech AAC to Makaton, symbols, pictures and objects of reference, we use a range of approaches to help our learners understand, express themselves and connect with others.

We model language as we play, during everyday routines and in adult-led activities, supporting both requesting and commenting.

⭐️ Makaton Monday Club ⭐️

Brilliant time at Makaton Monday Club at Newport CE Junior School today for Week 4️⃣ of my Autumn term.

Today was all centred around the theme of ‘FOOD’ & the children learnt:

⭐️ @makaton Sign Of The Week ‘FOOD’

⭐️ All these ‘FOOD’ related concepts:-
➡️ BURGER
➡️ CHIPS
➡️ FISH
➡️ CHEESE
➡️ PIZZA
➡️ SALAD
➡️ TAKEWAY
➡️ COFFEE
➡️ TEA
➡️ CANNED DRINK
➡️ HOW MUCH?
➡️ TO WANT

⭐️ Then the children took part in a Q&A session:-
➡️ I asked & signed them questions relating to these new signs
➡️ The children then had to answer my question whilst also signing it to me

⭐️ The children then started work on their sorting activity of identifying foods that make:-
➡️ A Healthy Diet
➡️ An Unhealthy Diet

We’ll continue to look at this activity next week.

Wow all that covered in just 30 minutes!!! 🤩

I look forward to seeing them all again next week, when they’ll be learning a new theme, based around next weeks #SignOfTheWeek
