Last April, I started coaching, and now I’ve officially completed my first year. Becoming a head coach just three months ago has been an amazing experience, and looking back, it’s crazy to see how it all started.

A little over a year ago, I was working in the dining hall at WRA with no plans of becoming a coach. I was talking with people about my background and track career, and from those conversations I was asked to coach jumps two days a week. I had no idea that small opportunity would completely change my life.

From training Tim privately and traveling to Adidas Nationals, to watching him and other athletes break barriers, gain confidence, and accomplish things they didn’t think they could do. I realized while I thought I was pouring into these kids, they were pouring into me too.

Every challenge, breakthrough, PR, and lesson has helped shape me into a better coach and a better person. Their progress gave me confidence. Their trust pushed me to learn more, care more, and become more.

I’m incredibly grateful to @_wra_ad and everyone who believed in me. Sometimes what you never planned becomes exactly what you were meant for.

A year ago, I was just getting to know Makayla. Before I was hired to coach at WRA, I remember seeing her in the dining hall with a New Balance Nationals bag and asking, “What do you know about that bag?” Since then, I’ve had the privilege of coaching my first true hurdler. Watching Makayla grow while she also watched me grow, from working in the dining hall then assisting with long jump to stepping into the head coach role in February.

Over this past year, I’ve watched her become one of the most decorated track and field athletes to come through Western Reserve Academy. She’s now just 0.18 seconds away from the school record in the 100-meter hurdles, already in the record book five different events, and still adding to her legacy. But what makes me most proud isn’t just the marks, it’s the journey. After hearing her senior speech and everything she has overcome, from asthma and life-threatening setbacks to moments where continuing the sport wasn’t guaranteed, seeing her now consistently running in the 15s and earning a Division I scholarship says everything about who she is.

We’ve had great moments, hard moments, and honest moments, and I’m grateful for all of them. In a lot of ways, Makayla reminds me of myself..focused, driven, and believing track could open doors to something bigger. That’s why it’s been so special to watch her. I’m proud of you, Makayla. Thank you for trusting me, for pushing through, and for leaving your mark on this program. I’m excited to watch what comes next, because this is only the beginning.
