Chien-An Yuan
City of Light, City of Shadow
August 18-September 29, 2024
CAMOC | Chinese American Museum of Chicago
238 W 23 Street, 4th Fl, Chicago, IL 60616

Opening Reception: Sunday, August 18, 2-5pm

The Chinese American Museum of Chicago’s (CAMOC) newest Spotlight Series exhibition will feature Chien-An Yuan in City of Light, City of Shadow, a photographic series documenting AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) artists envisioned in iconic and cinematic portraiture. The opening reception will be held at CAMOC on Sunday, August 18, from 2 – 5 p.m. CST. The show will run through September 29, 2024, and is free with a suggested museum donation.

Over a span of 14 years, Yuan has documented APIA artists he is honored to know as mentors and dear friends in a portraiture series inspired by legendary Asian film directors such as Wong Kar-Wai, Ann Hui, and Tsai Ming-Liang. Through this inspirational lens of contemporary Asian cinema, where glamor intertwines with urban melancholia and characters possess an almost mythical aura, this series aims then to capture not only the uniqueness of APIA creatives but also to establish a new visual language of APIA iconography.

By exploring the intersection between traditional portraiture and the aesthetics of these visionary directors, the project seeks to portray subjects who embody not only the audience’s aspirations but also their authentic selves.
The Spotlight Series is into its third year at CAMOC highlighting local artists of Chinese descent and is curated by Larry Lee of Molar Productions. The Series aims to introduce, promote, and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America.

Three left! Buncha fantastic hip hop / left field beats for ITOYITOM_2023_GregChaceLenMananMatt

Knowing most of these guys I bet they’ve heard almost all these tracks ha

Couple highlights : #1 is the unreleased for almost 30 years Dust Brothers remix of MC Tunes. The rapping couldn’t be more lame and dated but good lord, the production is out of this world. Knowing it was all done analog blows the mind and it’s prime Paul’s Boutique level goodness.

#2- the Gaz Coombes and Forest Swords - dang do they sound so good

Alright, one day I will gather yall and my bro @jienhin and @snydee415 and we will all hit up Peoples Records together. It’ll be a great time!

Mountain top moments are awesome but real history with God is developed in the every day moments. We aren't powerful because we win big moments, we're powerful because we're faithful with small moments when no one is looking.
Stay faithful!
