My mom asked me at dinner after Grad whether or not I regretted going to Grad in drag, not to be shady, it was a long day and I was tired and being in drag can be overwhelming even when you’re not graduating from university. Of course I don’t regret it, but I’ll explain why. Throughout my years at TMU every single time I’ve had the opportunity to choose what to do a project on, I’ve made it about drag. There’s a couple reasons for this, it started because I love drag, I live, breathe, eat drag, and so I created assignments that were about my journey, or my drag, or about the art form, but as I continued my research I noticed a significant lack of academic work that centred Drag. Often the articles were outdated, written by people who are not familiar with the vastness or the inner workings of the art form, and at times they attempted to make taxonomies or essentialist definitions about the art form. So as I continued on my journey, another reason arose for making my academic career about drag - it is important to do academic work on the art form as it legitimizes and historicizes drag within the academic space, it is important to continue creating knowledge and to write about it from the perspective of the artist.

It’s been 4 years of hard work, laughter, tears, dancing, costumes, late nights, and collaboration, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Performance Production class of 2026 absolutely rocked it, what an incredible time. I’m so grateful. 🫶💐🩷

What an honour and joy to be at Makela's convocation!

My heart is full of gratitude for the friends Makela made and experienced so many incredible opportunities together with.

The excellence with which Makela approached the projects she was assigned and challenged herself with, over her four years, is admirable.

I loved seeing and meeting some of the faculty who have mentored, believed in, and inspired Makela.

Congratulations to both Makela & Isaac!

We are so very proud of you and are excited to see where your next part of your journeys take you.
