First, I’d like to thank @candechange for giving me the platform to advocate for mental health and introduce something new to the community of @morganstateu. Thank you Baltimore for welcoming me with open arms and allowing me to be an advocate for the community. Baltimore might not be my hometown, but Baltimore has truly adopted a home for me. I’ll be honest, this journey into mental health advocacy hasn’t been easy. I realized that it doesn’t matter who is watching, who is listening, or what award is given to you because when you are doing God’s work… it’s not meant for everyone to understand. It’s hard when you want better for your community, but that one thing just so happens to be the most taboo topic in the black community.. yet the one thing the system used to break us down as a community.

MENTAL HEALTH (read that again)

Something EACH and every one of us struggle with regardless of age, race, or gender… but also something so surreal to accept from a community of people that have been taught to normalize the suppression of the secrecy to survival. Did you know that 63% of African Americans believe that mental health is a sign of weakness? 10% of blacks can’t even afford insurance… and research SHOWS that black mental health is underrepresented. So why do we still choose to continue to be slaves to a society that continues to put roadblocks in our way to surviving?

WE have to want better for ourselves… but to want better… we have to be shown better. Something different from what our oppressors deemed to us as “appropriate”. How can we allow the same people that oppressed us and turned us into a minority to be the same people that tell US how WE should live our lives?

One thing that resonated with me from the keynote was that we allow ourselves to continue to conduct ourselves like slaves and enslave our own people for wanting happiness… talk about food for thought. I could rant on and on about mental health… but I have the whole month to make you realize that the conversation doesn’t stop here. It continues each and everyday
