Look 2 - “African Masquerade”

Creating a masquerade look is a childhood fantasy come true to me . In the island where I grew up (São Vicente Cabo Verde) before carnaval there was “mascrinha”(masquerade) all over the streets bringing in the celebration of carnaval. They often provoked fear in most children but for me it was a whole show , art , creativity, a spectacle …

Later on as a more mature artist studying many aspects of African cultures, I learned that the person who wears a ritual mask is said to become the thing the mask represents for the time it is worn. They are usually worn in accompaniment of music and/or a traditional dance in ceremonies. Body paint and other forms of costume can serve the same purpose. The wearer is often said to become a medium that allows for communication to the spirit world. Masked dances are a part of most traditional African ceremonies related to weddings, funerals, initiation rites etc.

I more I learn the richer I become as a creator .

The cultural aspect of this particular African Masquerade Design comes from a spiritual realm I , myself can’t explain how it came to me .

Feel it 🤲🏾
