Learn, build, create at Makeville Studio

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In a world of content, I find it more than necessary to see, chat, and build with the people making art from the heart. And there was a LOT this weekend. And the events were free!

I attended my first Gowanus Open Studios and Sunset Park Open Studios and loved every second. Paintings, photography, woodworking, stylish eyewear, music, comics, ceramics. The artists truly blessed the attendees.

Above are a purchased vinyl mat, illustration, mug, coasters, and other assorted items I picked up. And most were priced to move, which I appreciated. Can't wait to work them into my everyday. Check their tags for more info.

Plus, the events were a fine reason to explore the BK waterfronts, including the @brooklynarmyterminal, @madebushterminal, @industrycity, Gowanus, and Red Hook.

What a day. If you haven't attended before and appreciate what the community is serving up, grab some comfortable kicks next year and explore the spaces! And maybe sign up for a class or two, like I will.

5 years married, 1 toddler, no village, 2 full-time jobs later this is how we spent our anniversary 😬

I’m not saying you should do this. But I’m not *not* saying it 👀

Step 1: Take a weekday off while your kid is in daycare

Step 2: Book a class where you make something with your hands. (bonus if it turns out to be a private class) We did a woodworking workshop at @makevillestudio in Brooklyn and made our own serving boards

Step 3: Pit stop at @runnerandstone for a sourdough chocolate chip cookie + savory scone (in case we got hungry during the workshop)

Step 4: For those 3-4 hours, forget you have a family and a house to run

Step 5: Pick a cuisine that touches your soul. For me it’s always Asian food, bonus points for dumplings 🥟 Lunch at @dinbrooklyn & oh those dumplings were too good & disappeared before I could get to my phone.

Step 6: Make it back in time for daycare pickup

Step 7: End the day with a mini celebration with the tiny human by having ice cream in the park 🍦

Screens off, hands busy, hearts full.
Back to parent duties by evening.

How are you spending date days as busy working parents?👇

It’s a beautiful autumn morning and the local woodworking studio is giving away scrap wood. Who could resist? Not me, for sure. I like to think I displayed a great deal of moderation. Let’s not discuss the lack of storage space in my studio, but focus instead on the lovely colors and grain. Think about the satisfying clinking sounds of wooden Scrabble pieces in your hand. Think about bolo ties, Portuguese knitting pins, pendants; charm bracelets, drop earrings sounding like wooden wind chimes, segmented cuff bracelets made with wood and metal inlay - maybe combined with leather. But Deirdre, you don’t have a band saw. Well, I can take a class and use the equipment @makevillestudio, can’t I? I then maybe I can also finally make matching side tables from the slabs of wood that have been sitting under one of my workbenches for years. But then I’d need to learn welding in order to make the metal table frames I’ve sketched out. One step at a time, Deirdre. Yes, it’s that time of year - when I’ll soon be between shows and eager to explore new design ideas. The itch to play and create is strong right now. Probably because I should be sorting displays and supplies for Rhinebeck. Really, anything to avoid drudge work. But pearls, turquoise and coral are calling to me. And wooden tiles. #bialopadindesigns #jewelrydesigner #handmadejewelry #madeinbrooklyn
