POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This week, we’re taking a closer look at the cases of Trey Reed, a 21-year-old Delta State University student found hanging from a tree on campus, and Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old whose body was found near Horn Island on the Mississippi Gulf Coast after he went missing during a Fourth of July outing.

Trey’s death was ruled a suicide, but questions raised by his family and concerns surrounding the investigation have kept his case in the public eye. Nolan’s cause and manner of death remain undetermined, and his family continues to seek answers following a grand jury’s decision not to indict anyone.

We’ll also examine Mississippi’s deep-rooted history of racism and how it continues to shape conversations about justice, transparency, and accountability.

Sometimes the cases we cover start with a Google search. Sometimes they start with a newspaper clipping. And sometimes… they start with your mother-in-law.

This week on Buried Bylines, we’re covering the case of Jean Ann Henry and her young son, Taylor, after a listener suggestion from a VERY special source: Mallory’s mother-in-law. ❤️

Jean had actually been a BRIDESMAID in her wedding (which the photo in this post is from) making this case feel especially personal.

Jean and Taylor were later found dead inside their home near Lexington, North Carolina. Jean’s second husband, Robert Henry, was charged with both murders.

The newspaper coverage raises a lot of questions about what was happening behind the scenes, including a history of domestic disputes, restraining orders and a separation before Jean started documenting the torment he was causing her in the months before he killed her.

So this week, we’re digging into the story of a woman who was once part of a very happy day in someone else’s life… and whose own story ended in tragedy.

🎙️ Listen to the newest episode of Buried Bylines wherever you get your podcasts. And if you’re an Unpaid Intern on Patreon, we are SPILLING the tea on: the drama between Ashley Flowers from Crime Junkie and actual journalists, the media ban at the White House, and the infamous 60 minutes interview with Patrick Clancy that is dominating our For You pages on TikTok.

And THANK YOU, Mallory’s mother-in-law, for the rabbit hole. 🫶

TEASER TUESDAY 🧡

that’s something I just came up with right now by the way. also it’s mallory. last episode I mentioned I was working on a case very close to my family. pictured above is my mother-in-law (the beautiful bride) and her bestie jean. I recently found out that jean died at the hands of domestic violence. she was trying to leave an abusive partner and it cost her, her life. I want to give a trigger warning for this week’s episode; I spent hours digging into every corner of the internet to find coverage on jean. her case is the epitome of why we started this podcast. it’s also a case that may resonate for some listeners. help is always out there. thank you to @cherbear1960 for sharing this photo and allowing me to tell this story!

WE HAVE AN EPISODE. FINALLY.

Okay. Listen.

I (Megan) am sorry this episode is late.

But in my defense… I had to be a PARTY PRINCESS. 👑✨

And unfortunately, I am committed to living my life, so sometimes the podcast has to wait while I go put on a ballgown and let children sneeze in my eyeballs in the name of whimsy. 😂

ANYWAY. Back to business.

This week on Buried Bylines, we’re talking about the disappearance of Jodi Husenstruit… and as two former newsies, this was a particularly wild case for us to dig into. We talk about Jodi, the investigation, the unanswered questions, and what it’s like looking at a case like this through the eyes of people who spent years working in local news.

We also catch up on the Lindsay Clancy mistrial and talk about Netflix’s Death of a Pastor’s Wife.

And if you want the FULL conversation about Death of a Pastor’s Wife and opinions on the trial outcome (we have many), our Unpaid Interns can find that over on Patreon! It’s just $5/month to join the chaos and get access to our bonus content. 👀

So yes, this episode is late. The life of a podcasting party princess waits for no one.

Thank you for continuing to listen, share, review, send us tips, and hang out with us week after week. We genuinely would not get to keep doing this without you.

Now… LET’S GET INTO IT. 🕵️‍♀️🎙️

This week, we’re stepping away from the headlines we usually cover and talking to someone who has literally been behind the camera for some of them. 📹👀

We sat down with our former coworker and broadcast photojournalist, Trae Hester, to hear about his career, what it’s really like to chase breaking news, and some of the stories that have stuck with him over the years.

He shares one of his favorite assignments: covering President Obama’s visit to Indiana alongside his dad—who was also a photojournalist. 🥹📸

And because no career in television is complete without a little public humiliation, he also tells us about the time he showed up to breaking news after accidentally drinking a detox smoothie 💀 …and another unforgettable moment involving forgotten camera batteries. 🔋😂

Come listen to what life is like behind the lens… and the hear stories you don’t always get when the cameras are rolling. #podcast #news #journalism #indiana

In April 2013, 24-year-old Jessica Masker was struggling to get her life back on track when she disappeared from Indianapolis’s east side. The single mom of two was last seen on surveillance video at a gas station near her cousin’s house.

Despite local news coverage and continued pleas from her family, Jessica’s disappearance remains unsolved more than a decade later. In this episode, we explore the events leading up to Jessica’s disappearance, the investigation that followed, the media attention her case received, and the lingering questions that remain unanswered more than a decade later. #missing #indianapolis #podcast #truecrime

Journalists by trade. Ghost hunters... not so much.
But when a mansion earns the title of one of America’s most haunted homes, we have questions.

This week on Buried Bylines, it’s Christmas (Halloween) in July! We’re investigating the legend of Summerwind Mansion… digging through decades of stories, separating documented history from paranormal lore, and deciding for ourselves whether this Wisconsin mansion deserves its chilling reputation.

🎧 Listen now... and tell us: haunted or hype?

Bonus picture from my (Megan’s) editing bay as an apology for being a day late. #momlife #haunted #podcast #wisconsin #summerwind
