In a maximalist home in San Juan, Susana Simonpietri grew up surrounded by art most people spend a lifetime learning to collect. Her parents championed Latin American art, bringing home paintings and sculptures at a time when US and European markets hadn’t yet caught up to its value. Her father bought frequently at auction, which is how a piece by Wilfredo Lam, now held by the Whitney, ended up on the family’s walls. Her mother worked as a curator and kept an eye on younger, less established artists alongside the bigger names.
Susana is the creative force behind Chango, a Brooklyn-based interior design studio, affectionately named after the gregarious blackbird native to Puerto Rico. Chango embodies the playful, unexpected energy she and her team bring to every project, and a design practice built on carefully curated personality and practicality.
A childhood spent among art floor to ceiling taught Susana to love it fiercely. It also fed her design instinct in the opposite direction: a desire for pared-down interiors that lean on the artwork as the wildcard.

This crowning achievement of the "País Maravilla" series encapsulates the knowledge and mysticism inherited from living alongside indigenous spiritual guides. Its creation process defies the artist's usual methodology: executed over nearly a year without digital pre-configuration, the painting allowed time and ritual experiences to dictate the pulse of its composition. Conceived as a monumental 300 × 300 cm triptych, the piece is a poetic translation of astral journeys and the transcendental visions of shamanism. Through a rigorous amalgamation of clean polygons and a native-rooted color palette, the artist constructs a threshold to the sacred. This experimental painting transcends mere two-dimensionality to become a totemic presence within the architectural space, inviting the viewer to participate in a profoundly introspective aesthetic experience.

In Technicolor Spirits No.2, I reinterpret the composition of my previous work, adapting it to a vertical format of 175 x 130 x 5 cm. For this painting, I replaced the traditional canvas with a rigid MDF support mounted on a wooden structure, providing a 5-centimeter edge that projects from the wall. This change of medium modifies the execution of my geometric and deconstructivist abstraction. On the smooth MDF surface, I apply a gesso base to prepare for subsequent layering. The visual resolution is achieved through a technical combination of acrylics, spray paint, and inks, allowing the lines, overlapping planes, and transparencias to acquire sharpness and geometric definition. Conceptually, I base the color palette on the material heritage of Mexico. My studio process combines these contemporary mediums with the research and use of locally sourced natural pigments, linking the languages of international modernism with the traditions and raw materials of the Mexican cultural context.

With "Amapola Albina," my volumetric and biocultural research ventures into the realm of absolute visual silence. While my previous work celebrates the chromatic vibrancy of our textile heritage and organic pigments from the earth, this monochromatic piece proposes a subtle conceptual void within the series. This is not a renunciation of identity, but rather a formal purification.By stripping the flower’s morphology of its rich, native hues, I encapsulate its structure within a scale of whites and gradient grays that ascend toward the upper crests. This subtle tonal transition emphasizes the functionalist and deconstructivist lineage of my practice, transforming the sculpture into a contemporary geometric fossil. "Amapola Albina" operates as the mystical counterweight and optical repose of my visual universe; a three-dimensional portal proving that Mexicanness and material heritage can also inhabit the purity of absolute white, challenging linear folkloric readings to claim a definitive space within universal abstraction.
