@CairoScene LIVE from the closing ceremony of the 10th edition of Manassat Film Festival at Zawya Cinema. To wrap up the festival, Manassat recognised and celebrated the Egyptian filmmakers behind the camera, behind the PC and behind the script. As one of the only film festivals in Egypt celebrating the craft as much as it celebrates who we see onscreen, if not more, Manassat awarded set designers, directors, screenwriters, producers and editors behind the films.

After its successful festival run, Ali Ali’s short film Smokey Eyes is now available for streaming on Vimeo. Starring Marwan Moussa and Nancy Ali, the film follows a date gone awry as the couple drives through Cairo. Based on a true story from the director’s sister, it explores the daily struggles young people face in the city, highlighting issues such as the policing of “immorality,” religious tensions, and the restrictions on women’s freedoms.

This film marks the director’s debut in short filmmaking, following a background in advertising and commercial directing. It had its premiere at the Red Sea International Film Festival and was also featured at the Amman International Film Festival.
