✨May God have mercy on your soul✨

The Devils (1971) is a historical drama based on real events in 17th century Loudon France. Directed and Screenplay by Ken Russell, Set design by Derek Jarman, and Costume design by Shirley Russell. The basis of the film was based on the book The Devils of Loudon by Aldous Huxley (1952) and John Whiting’s stage play The Devils (1960).

The film takes place in 17th century Loudon, France, where a sexually repressed Mother Superior Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave) and her convent accuses a well respected priest, Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed) of witchcraft and seduction. The Mother Superior goes through a series of tortuous public exorcisms to name to the Baron who the individual is. When it is revealed that it is Urbain Grandier, an investigation is opened to build evidence. As the confessions begin to increase by the convent, Grandier is eventually arrested and put on trial. His home is ransacked and his own wife (Gemma Jones) is forced to confess his crimes. Found guilty, Grandier is sentenced to torture, humiliation, and death, putting an innocent man to trial for a crime he didn’t commit.

The film was banned in multiple countries in 1971 due to “religious hysteria, torture, nudity, and religious blasphemy” until 2001, where the film was rated X and heavily censored. On October 16, 2026, the film was re-released into its former glory, the way Ken Russell intended, with cut scenes restored and in 4K all due to Ken Russell, Mark Kermode (@kermodedodge), and Michael Bradsell’s hard work to preserve the film.

Day 12: Dracula (1931)

Dracula is a 1931 American pre-Code vampire film directed and co-produced by Tod Browning from a screenplay written by Garrett Fort and starring Bela Lugosi in the title role. It is based on the 1924 stage play Dracula by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston, which in turn is adapted from the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. Lugosi portrays Count Dracula, a vampire who emigrates from Transylvania to England and preys upon the blood of living victims, including a young man’s fiancée. (Wikipedia, n.d)

Day 11: Bela Lugosi (Spotlight Sunday)

Happy Spotlight Sunday, today’s golden beam of—or should I say velvet curtains cover the windows for Dracula himself, Mr. Bela Lugosi! 🧛‍♂️🦇

Bela Lugosi (born Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó; October 20, 1882 – August 16, 1956) was a Hungarian-American actor best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Count Dracula in Universal Pictures’ Dracula (1931). After beginning his stage career in Hungary in 1902 and serving as an infantry officer during World War I, Lugosi immigrated to the United States following political unrest in his homeland. His breakthrough came in the Broadway adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a role he later immortalized on screen and which firmly established him as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable horror stars.

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Lugosi appeared in numerous classic horror films, including The Black Cat, The Raven, Son of Frankenstein, and Ghost of Frankenstein, often alongside fellow horror legend Boris Karloff. Although typecasting and health struggles affected his later career, he remained a beloved figure of the genre, appearing in several low-budget productions during his final years. Lugosi died of a heart attack in Los Angeles on August 16, 1956, at the age of 73. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California, wearing his famous Dracula costume and cape, a decision made by his family in tribute to the role that defined his legacy.
