Planet Dust - Bad Company
Year - 2001
Label - Prototype Recordings
Catalogue Number - PRO 003UK

Here we have an absolute anthem from 2001.
For me Bad Company were and always be the biggest and best D&B collective ever.
This era of D&B was defined by Bad Company and they helped move the whole scene to the depths of darkness that only a few others did.

Planet Dust was a groundbreaking tune that got absolutely rinsed by absolutely every D&B DJ on the planet and also have to mention how sick the flip ‘Speedball’ is too btw.
Again some will say the best D&B tune of all time.
BC were relentless with releases that were a whole different level.
Sc-fi, deep, dark energy that were way ahead of there time and often there tunes were in a completely different time zone.
Book of the bad volumes, Digital Nation, Inside The Machine, The Fear Ep, The Pulse & The Nine all on another level and experimental in their own different ways.

Timeless

PS - If anyone wants to sell me a copy with the original artwork sleeve I’d be more than grateful 😁

The Nine - Bad Company
Year - 1999
Label - BC Recordings
Catalogue Number - BCRUK001

In 1999 Bad Company released this absolute monster that changed Drum & Bass.
A year previous to this 4 lads going by the names of Vegas, D Bridge, Fresh & Maldini met and started Bad Company.
Fresh and Vegas were already working together whilst D Bridge and Maldini were releasing material under Future Forces Inc on labels like Renegade Hardware.
The four of them got in the studio and worked together and released this monster.

The Nine considered to some as the biggest and best Drum & Bass track ever made.
If you think that or not is another conversation but what I will say from being on the rave circuit at the time the energy and drop of this track absolutely blew the scene to pieces and changed that era of Drum & Bass and I never heard a tune impact a rave as much as this.
There wasn’t a set you’d hear without this being dropped.
This is not a fact but I would guess that this is the biggest selling D&B single of all time.

For as big as what this tune is at the time I preffered other stuff they had released including 4 days, The Pulse and too many tracks to mention on both there LP’s Digital Nation & Inside The Machine.

Is this D&B’s biggest ever tune?

4 Days - Bad Company (The Fear EP)
Year - 2000
Label - BC Recordings
Catalogue Number - VDBCR002

Absolute monster from Bad Company that literally tore dance floors up and down the country.
Bad Company were making bangers left, right and centre at this time and paved the way for era of D&B that many will still say was the golden era.
There sound bringing dark, deep, moody and Sc-fi sounding samples made them stand out from the rest and stand the test of time.

Absolute classic

“The Nine” isn’t a one off - it sits at the apex of a dozen or so tunes that preceded it and spawned countless imitations, making Bad Company the ones to watch from then on - while not to everyone’s taste possibly due to the absolute tidal wave of play, it remains one of d’n’b’s most energetic and iconic tracks to date and isn’t likely to disappear from anyone’s memory, especially those who were there at the beginning, watching it emerge - #DNB98 tune of the year? 💿 VANGUARD VAULTS #004 💿

⚡ Some records don’t follow trends… they become the blueprint.

🎵 Bad Company – The Pulse
📀 Prototype Recordings | 1999

Dark, relentless and years ahead of its time, The Pulse announced that Bad Company were about to redefine Drum & Bass. Their futuristic production and uncompromising sound helped shape an entire generation of producers and remain hugely influential more than two decades later.

🇯🇪 Vanguard Archives: In 2002, we were proud to bring Bad Company to headline the legendary Watersplash. They delivered one of the most cutting-edge Drum & Bass events of that era to Jersey, giving local ravers a taste of the future and helping inspire a new generation of the Island’s underground scene.

🖤 Some records capture a moment… The Pulse helped shape the future.

👇 If you were there in 2002, what do you remember most about that night?

This months Label In Focus is RENEGADE HARDWARE '96-'98.
The label was set up in 1995 by Clayton Hines and Mark Hill, with their vision being to create a label that would stay true to its sound and develop up and coming artists in the scene.
Over the years they have been responsible for some of the darkest, hardest, Amen filled bangers around and the label is one of the pioneers of the Atmospheric Techstep sound of the mid 90's.
This mix concentrates on those early years '96-'98 and features artists Future Forces Inc., Genotype, Paradox, Dom & Roland, Dylan & more..

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to what is markedly one of the all time great compilations of the late 90’s - but we haven’t/won’t/can’t forget Mr Francis even for more than a week, and his remix of Future Forces Inc’s “Strontium Jazz” is a straight up “banger” as the kids say - for those wondering, the vocal comes from Byron Stingily in Marshall Jefferson’s Ten City outfit with “Devotion”, one for the house heads! A revamped 1998 Renegade Hardware saw fresh faces… uh, Fresh and Vegas aka Absolute Zero team up with Subphonics aka Future Forces Inc’s Maldini… oh wait, the unfairly uncredited Monochrome also had hands on dials, Monochrome BKA dBridge - making this the first official unofficial Bad Company release? Politics aside, this precursor to another extremely famous tune is an absolute monster, obliterating brains from up over to down under - we weren’t ready! - RH012 … #HardwareHistory #dailydnb #drumandbass #dnb #jungle dnbarchive historyofdnb absolutezero subphonics monochrome thecode renegadehardware 1998

After a bit of poking around I still can’t say for sure whether or not the “Final Chapter” mix of “Dead By Dawn” is (dubplates and whatnot aside) the last track in the Future Forces series (short of bothering anyone involved, or even going through Clayton Hines’ incendiary book again) - obviously it would make sense, and the one sided/etched wax is the perfect send off before we slip into pre-BC aliases and a host of newer artists on the redecorated Hardware roster - so which one does it for you? This savage remix, or the floor mashing OG? - RH11 … #HardwareHistory #dailydnb #drumandbass #dnb #jungle dnbarchive historyofdnb futureforcesinc deadbydawn thefinalchapter renegadehardware 1998

Back with Maldini & dBridge, and “Saga” goes full Grump™️, gradually filling out over 8 minutes of soiled solidity - 1997 wasn’t exactly the cheeriest of years when it comes to d’n’b, the shift towards techno-metallic terrain difficult to resist for a generation raised on android sheep and Akira - thus Renegade Hardware, an outlet that put smiles on the faces of those attuned to the bio-mechanical symbiosis and always doubled down in the face of the haters - RH09 … #dailydnb #drumandbass #dnb #jungle #dnbarchive historyofdnb futureforcesinc saga renegadehardware 1997 HardwareHistory
