@malika.booker on the mic. 🎤🔥

She took the stage at THE BLACK POETRY SHUTDOWN and the whole room caught it. Hearing her read her own work hits completely different. 🖤

Pure vibes from start to finish. What a way to close out

🙌🏾'Celebrating @kwame.dawes : In Laureateship, Poetry & Community' was nothing short of thought-provoking and inspirational.

✨️ Jamaica's Poet Laureate was joined by @jallenpaisant and @malika.booker for a superb evening of conversation and poetry we were proud to be a part of bringing together with amazing partners - Leeds own @peepaltreepress the fabulous @renaissanceone and our friends @leedslibraries 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾

It was something of a homecoming to Leeds, a city with a decades-long connection for Kwame, and to #LeedsCityLibrary where he last appeared for our 2022 Out of Many Festival 'Calabash Presents' collab with @calabashfestival and Jamaica Society Leeds.

Our founders #DawnCameron and @susanpitter joined a captivated audience of poets and lovers of poetry and literature as Kwame's words reminded us all that now, more than ever, community and family are everything. 🥹

Word.

A vibrant, soulful evening at Leeds Central Library with @kwame.dawes alongside @malika.booker and @jallenpaisant
Beyond the poetry, Kwame’s reflections on family, love and community really resonated. His commitment to mentoring, nurturing voices and opening doors reminds us that our voices matter, but so does what we make possible for others.
Later, over delicious food and rich conversation at @aagrahleeds , hosted by Peepal Tree Press, I was reminded how vital this circle of creative minds is. An ‘army’, as Kwame called it, advancing Black literature while nourishing the writers who give it life.
✨🖤✨

With thanks to @renaissanceone @outofmanypeople @peepaltreepress @leedslibraries and @leedsbeckettofficial

📸 Photo credit to the brilliant @ashleykarrell, who’s been capturing the faces, voices and creative pulse of Leeds’ literary scene for years. ✨🖤✨

Y’all need to come listen to Kwame Dawes if you’re anywhere nearby.

Kwame Dawes is a real and precious one. Path finder, investor in talent, mentor, community builder, big poet. Years of experience, and a whole lot of love for the craft and for people. He’s mentored me and many others besides.

This man knows the ins and outs of poetry. The ins and outs of our history. He knows how to build, how to teach, how to make room. Nothing less than a treasure in the African diaspora.

Come meet up with Kwame Dawes next Monday. All info on the slide.
