What a powerful and thought-provoking afternoon at the Museum of Liverpool for the launch of Overwriting–Underwriting — the first research pilot of the Connector Project.
We were warmly welcomed by Laura Pye, Director of National Museums Liverpool, who opened an event dedicated to uncovering the hidden financial networks that underpinned Britain’s involvement in transatlantic slavery — including the insurance, underwriting and commercial systems that enabled and benefited from the trade in enslaved African people.

It was a privilege to hear from Dr Abdul Malik Al Nasir, whose research and personal connection to these histories brings such urgency and humanity to this work.

The launch brought together an exceptional group of speakers and contributors: Professor Verene Shepherd, Professor Pedro Ramos Pinto, Dr Marsha Pearce and Dr Leona Vaughn, alongside Michelle Charters OBE, Head of the International Slavery Museum, and Lucy Moynihan, University of Liverpool PhD researcher and International Slavery Museum research associate on the Connector Project.

The conversations were honest, challenging and necessary. They reminded us that uncovering history is not simply about looking backwards — it is about truth, responsibility, education, repair and creating a more informed future.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing Overwriting–Underwriting and the Connector Project to life.

Big conversations, brilliant women and powerful stories on this week’s BBC UK Black. ✨

Historian, author and researcher Dr Abdul Malik Al Nasir joined us to talk about the Connector Project with the International Slavery Museum exploring the history and continuing legacies of transatlantic enslavement, and why uncovering these stories still matters today.

We also celebrated some phenomenal women from the Merseyside Women of the Year Awards: Michelle O’Dwyer, founder of Bay Tree Cookery CIC and Merseyside Woman of the Year 2026; Saba Ahmed, recipient of the Fellowship Award; and Ellie Kerr, Founding Director of MWOTY.

From preserving history to tackling hunger, building community and championing women this is what impact looks like.

Thank you for joining us, Malik, Michelle, Saba and Ellie. ❤️

Thank you to all the politics students who attended today’s lecture for the Politics of Race and Marginalisation where we were treated to not just one but two amazing guest Q&As from Canadian International Relations Dr Ajay Parasram, and Cambridge historian, and Scouse musician, and poet Dr Malik Al Nasir. Both scholars’ writings are core texts of this 2nd Year Politics module, taught by Dr Amal Abu-Bakare, which centres exploring the transnational politics of race present in the city of Liverpool.

Had the most amazing time at the @harpercollinsuk Author Academy Alumni evening in London yesterday.

Left feeling incredibly inspired after hearing the panel and warm after meeting so many lovely like-minded individuals. Was certainly worth travelling from Newcastle and back in a day!

I was especially happy to finally meet some of the amazing women from my Fiction Cohort in person!! 🙌🏽 Hopefully it won’t be too long until we see eachother again x

Thank you so much HarperCollins for the invitation. A couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it possible! Just pick up that pen/laptop, you never know what could happen!

Officials from the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool, UK, visited the Jamaica Music Museum’s exhibition, ‘African to Jamaican: Music & Creolized Black Culture,’ and are in absolute awe. Describing it as an inspiring and deeply moving experience. The exhibition brilliantly traces the enduring influence of African heritage on Jamaica’s musical journey and powerfully celebrates the resilience and creativity of the creolized Black identity. It is a testament to Jamaica Music Museum’s commitment to preserving and sharing stories that resonate far beyond Jamaica’s shores.

Honoured to Welcome Malik Al Nasir to the Jamaica Music Museum (JaMM)

Malik Al Nasir, author of ‘Searching for my Slave Roots’ (2025) and ‘Letters to Gil’ (2021) Harper Collins, was visiting Jamaica from the UK, to attend the 57th Annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean Historians (ACH).

Thank you for this review.

THE JAMAICA Music Museum (JaMM) is hosting an exhibition called ‘African to Jamaican – Music & Creolised Black Culture at’ its Tower Street gallery in downtown Kingston.

Jamaica culture, influenced by the circumstances of the European labour enterprise that brought Africans to the island, features artistic expression that are simultaneously resilient and adaptable. From the cadence of speech to the style of dress, from spiritual fervour to the rhythm of dance, the richness of food and the depth of folklore, intoxicating music, vibrant art and infectious religious rituals, African retentions have not just been preserved, but have become an integral part of our national cultural identity,” the JaMM says about the showcase.

A great majority of the exhibits were donated by some musicians themselves, or by their loved ones or their associates. They include Sonny Bradshaw, Headley Jones, Augustus Pablo, Sugar Belly, Ernie Rangling, Adina Edwards, Lloyd Knibb, Chino Smith, Count Bassie, Larry McDonald, Peter Tosh, Rico Rodriquez, Ossie Scott, Dean Fraser, Sly Dunbar, Desi Jones, Carrot Jarrett, Robbie Shakespeare, The Skatalites, etc.

There are also television sets of yesteryear, a jonkunnu ‘pitchy-patchy’ costume, artwork by renowned Jamaican artists, a framed collage of photos taken at the One Love Peace Concert in April 1978 when Bob Marley brought Edward Seaga and Michael Manley onstage, and a replica of the shirt Marley wore to the event.

The treasures in the space were curated by Herbie Miller, the director of the Jamaica Music Museum. (Source The Gleaner)
