An absolute highlight from last week - performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic @laphil at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall. 🙌🇺🇸

It was a true joy and honor to share this stunning stage with such extraordinary musicians, under the brilliant baton of Susanna Mälkki @malkkiconductor on the US premiere of @miroslav_srnka Superorganisms.

Excited and looking forward to what the coming months have in store! ✨

Like what you hear? It’s Ryan Roberts, our Principal Oboist, playing the Oboe Concerto by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů. 🇨🇿

It’s just a taste of what you can expect at the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s upcoming matinees! 👀

Join us tomorrow, October 9, at 11am or on Sunday, October 11, at 2pm to hear Ryan and the orchestra with conductor Susanna Mälkki.

Susanna Mälkki explores the many possibilities of the orchestra.

Béla Bartók described his Concerto for Orchestra as a gradual progression from the stern and stately to life-affirming enthusiasm.

Former Principal Guest Conductor Susanna Mälkki has been widely celebrated for her ability to “make conspicuous magic” (Gramophone) of Bartók.

She returns to deftly navigate the concerto’s shifting character that dances between a charming “game of pairs,” an eerie elegy, and humorous jab at Shostakovich with countless showcase opportunities for the musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Where Bartók treats the orchestra as a collection of soloists, Czech composer Miroslav Srnka imagines the symphony as a biological superorganism—like bees, ants, or perhaps humans—whose subtle movements and seemingly individual roles reveal a greater and hypnotic collective effect.

Closing the first half, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s new Principal Oboe Ryan Roberts, celebrated for his “alluring solo playing” and “flawless poetry” by The New York Times, takes the spotlight in Martinů’s brief yet compelling Oboe Concerto, which offers lyrical beauty, jazz-inflected rhythms, and even a Czech polka.

As Steve Reich turns 90, musicians around the world are celebrating one of the most influential musical voices of the last century with performances spanning his landmark early works, major recent compositions, and the unveiling of his newest piece, "In All Your Ways."

Highlights this fall include a 24-hour celebration across Graz, bringing some 90 musicians to 24 locations, and the North American premiere of "In All Your Ways" at @soundstreams in Toronto. In New York, the @parkavearmory marks the 50th anniversary of "Music for 18 Musicians" with the Steve Reich Ensemble, @alarmwillsound, and students from the @msm.nyc; @carnegiehall presents an all-Reich program with @bangonacan, @ensemblesignal, and @brycedessner; and the @nyphilharmonic and @92ndstreety (ft. @sopercussion ) offer further birthday performances.

The season also includes performances by the Colin Currie Group in Hamburg, London, and Paris, all-Reich programs with the @londonsymphonyorchestra and Susanna Mälkki in the two latter cities, and a tour of Reich's music by percussionist Kuniko Kato across North America and Japan.
