The Discerning Eye Exhibition 2026
The Mall Galleries
13th-21st Nov, 2026
Open: 10am-5pm daily

Rafflesia Arnoldi - Critically endangered

Dr Jasmine Pradissitto selected a second work, which is supported by the eternal Seed of Life, or otherwise known as the Flower of Life. I find it fascinating how sacred geometry has been at the very foundation within the art and architecture of the ancient worlds. As in the temples of Egypt, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, Ireland, Spain, and China. There is a fundamental unity or an oneness within all creation, a visual blueprint of the universe. This is what I think connects us to everything and everyone, a circle of life.

Whilst this is one of the biggest flowers in the world, it is also a parasitic flower with no roots, stems, leaves, or chlorophyll. They are found in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Living inside the Tetrastigma grape vine stem, it takes up to 9 months for a bud to grow and swell before it breaks through the bark and remains as a giant flower, 1.14 meters in diameter. Yet within 5 - 7 days, the flower will rot away and die.

Locally, it is known as the Bunga Bangkai, or Corpse Flower, as it smells like rotting flesh, attracting flies, which becomes its pollinators.

The web of life is everywhere surrounding us, and within us.
Yet, this species has become endangered due to our wholesale destruction of their natural habitat for timber extraction, palm oil plantation, harvesting its buds for medicinal purposes, and various other monoculture, crop cultivation. All of which have decimated the natural rainforest, making the Rafflesia Arnoldi flower a Critically Endangered Species.

I simply can not wait to see this richly diverse exhibition at the Mall Galleries.
Thank you to everyone involved in making this exhibition such a joy to participate in. And a special thank you to all the 6 independent selectors: Hugh Bonneville @bonhughbon | Dr Jasmine Pradissitto @jasmine_pradissitto | Jon Sharples @jon_sharples | Kelvin Okafor @kelvinokafor_art | Martin Robinson @martinxrobinson | Melanie Gerlis @mgerlis

One of two entries selected for the Discerning Eye competition this year. This little collage is a run of similar works inspired by reflections in sand on the north Pembrokeshire coast.

The Discerning Eye is well worth a visit to see a broad range of (small) artworks at the Mall Galleries, London in this popular and well established exhibition. Get there early as sales are high!

Some incredibly exciting news—my painting was selected for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition! 🎉

I dedicated my whole summer to painting with this exact exhibition in mind, so seeing it make the final cut is an absolute dream come true.

Knowing it passed a rigorous, blind selection process by some of the country’s finest oil painters has me over the moon. Seeing posts of the other wonderful work also selected is a feast for my eyes, and I can't wait to see the collection in person.

Come and see it on the walls at the gorgeous @mallgalleries in London from 26 November to 12 December 2026! 🖼️

‘Ray Atkins Unseen’ closed today at Mall Galleries, bringing together rarely seen works by one of post-war Britain’s most distinctive and under-recognised painters, whose training under Frank Auerbach placed him in the orbit of the School of London.

Nearly fifty years after his landmark Whitechapel exhibition, curated by Auerbach, the exhibition traced Atkins’ development from densely painted interiors to vivid depictions of Britain’s changing urban landscape. Thickly applied paint, richly textured surfaces, and vigorous brushwork give his paintings a striking physical presence.

I had the pleasure of researching and writing the exhibition text, an opportunity to explore Atkins’ contribution to post-war British painting. More to come…

THANKYOU @norwichframeworkshop for the beautiful floating frame you created for my first ever selected work!

As well as this brilliant bit of craftsmanship, Lee gave great advice to this complete rookie exhibitor who's never been selected for anything before- not even the local open calls. Going straight into the prestgious @mallgalleries after being chosen for this year's @discerningeyeorg is quite the leap!

Obviously the old girl has to be dressed for the occasion.

THE PICTURE. I mean the picture.

But I've got a new outfit too, of course! 😅
