![Show me your favourite view of 2023? 💌
I love seeing where everyone is riding, & sharing the ups and downs of this sport in all its creative variations (gravel, road, mtb, commuting, all of it). I especially enjoy sharing those moments when the view suddenly takes your breath away, and you feel in sync with your bike, your body, & your surroundings.
Here’s one of my favourite views of 2023, from my first solo ride near Porto, Portugal in late November—looking out over the ocean there, I felt more at peace than I had for a long time.
But sometimes the most peaceful or exhilarating moments happen “nowhere in particular,” maybe at sunrise or sunset, that route you’ve done a hundred times, or on the familiar commute back home.

![Hi there. Want to ride with me from Porto to the nearby Capela do Senhor da Pedra? 🌊⛪️
The tiny church (“Chapel of the Lord of Stone”) is perched on a boulder in the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by an expanse of open beach. It’s only 15km or so from our apartment, but I took my time exploring as the bike & I got to know each other.
To get there, I relied on my @ridebeeline Velo 2 for navigation. The tricky parts of the route were traffic circles and the twists & turns of the cobblestoned streets (distinctly not pleasant with narrow tires), until I reached the wide & convenient, red-painted bike lanes following the coastline.
It’s such an uncanny sight, the ancient church sitting there with the waves crashing all around. I carried the bike across the sand for a closer look.
A custodian was there, sweeping; we exchanged a bom dia, hi. Nobody else around. I had a snack & watched the waves until the wind picked up & I started shivering.
There were some sudden steep inclines along the back home, which required some extra momentum because this bike doesn’t have as many gears as I’m accustomed to 😅 Plus I’ve got a clumsy combo of platform pedals + running shoes going on.
But way my *mental health struggles* evaporate as soon as I get on a bike & have a destination!
It’s been a long time since If felt that rush of exhilaration—the combination of a new challenge, solitude, exertion, adventure, & all my senses wide open.😌
I’m already planning tomorrow’s ride.
