👏 Thank you to everyone who joined us this past Sunday for our annual Fall OPEN STUDIOS! 👏 For one day only, our normally private artist studios opened to the public, allowing guests to explore 50+ studios and creative spaces across four floors while enjoying brunch and cocktails. 🥐🍸🍾 Scroll ➡️ for some highlights! Alongside OPEN STUDIOS, Artists In Residence Noelle Lorraine Williams (@blackpower_19thcentury) and Lina Puerta (@linapuertaart) led exhibition tours. ✨ At 800 Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard, Noelle Lorraine Williams’ “Black Revolutionary Women” highlights Black women’s resistance, survival, and freedom-making across the Americas, reframing dominant narratives of the American Revolution. ✨ At 110 Edison Place, Lina Puerta’s “La Sierpe” centers the serpent as an ancient symbol of cyclical time, transformation, and collective renewal. The immersive exhibition explores ancestral knowledge, ecological balance, and collective care. 🎨 Finally, our lower level hosted a Community Quilting Mural Workshop led by Bisa Butler (@bisabutler)! The City of Newark Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs (@cityofnewarknj) has commissioned renowned Newark artist Bisa Butler to create her inaugural large-scale mural, which will be installed in downtown Newark. During OPEN STUDIOS, community members were invited to see the mural in progress, learn about Bisa’s creative process, and help develop it. Thank you to everyone who joined us on this rainy day! ☔️ 📸 Images by Carlos Hernandez (@carloshernandezstudios).

The waters returned to the Ironbound yesterday, reminding us what this ground still is: the Newark Meadows, tended by the Lenape, who have cared for this place and all its life since long before it was named. In two weeks, join us in that spirit. "The Islands Have Stories" is a series of four walks through Newark's Meadows, guided by 4 artists exploring 4 ways of sensing place. On each walk, an artist guides participants in making works on paper, gathered afterward into a limited run of riso-printed publications and shared back with participants and the City of Newark. WALK 1: Oct 24 / Chrystofer Davis / Framing Edges WALK 2: Oct 25 / Larissa Belcic / Foraging Tools WALK 3: Oct 31 / Andrew Harrison / Making Inks WALK 4: Nov 1 / Amanda Thackray / Rubbing Place RISO BOOK LAUNCH: April 21, 2027 / Under the Pink Moon _____ "The Islands Have Stories" is free and open to the public, though RSVPs are required. Space is limited! LINK IN BIO TO TO SECURE YOUR SPOT. _____ This program marks the launch of Newark Dept of Care & Belonging, a speculative civic agency built on a simple premise that place – and all the life forms living with it – are bound in care for one another, and that this belonging should guide how civic decisions get made. Newark Dept of Care & Belonging is partially supported by a Creative Catalyst grant from the City of Newark, Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs, and a Newark Artist Accelerator grant from Project for Empty Space and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. @dolo_foto @larissabelcic @black_el_dorado @mandattacks @projectforemptyspace @cityofnewarknj Audio excerpt of our dear friend Chief Vincent Mann, Turtle Clan, Ramapough Lunaape Nation, performing "Song of Thanks" at opening celebration of exhibition at Gallery Bergen, Bergen Community College. It’s officially arts week here in Newark - and tonight is going to be BIG fun! Repost via @projectforemptyspace 📣 In 2024, we launched the Newark Grounds Cultural Corridor @newarkgrounds with the City of Newark @cityofnewarknj, Newark City Parks Foundation @newarkcityparks, and many partners to bring public art and cultural programming beyond our walls and into the neighborhoods, streets, and parks of Downtown Newark. At the heart of this work is a simple idea: art is for everyone. ✨ Tomorrow, Friday, October 9, from 5:00–9:00 PM, we’re bringing Newark Grounds NIGHT FEST back to Mulberry Commons for its fourth edition, this year as part of the Newark Arts Festival. @newarkarts RSVP via link in @projectforemptyspace bio 🔗⬆️ Join us for an evening of community, food, music, and making. Throughout the night, local artists and arts organizations will lead free, hands-on creative activities for all ages. Drop in, try something new, experiment with different materials, and leave with something you made yourself. 🎃🎶🎨 A glimpse of what you’ll find: * Air-Dry Clay * Bead Mosaics * Button Making * Letterpress Printing * Live Music * Monotype Printing * Mural Painting * Postcard Design * Pumpkin Decorating * Stencil & Tote Design * Textile Arts * Zine Coloring * & more! While you’re there, don’t miss the opportunity to spend some time with Constellation Bench by Eirini Linardaki before the work comes down at the end of October. Everyone is welcome. Come for the music, stay for the making, and leave with something of your own. - P.S. Happy fall break and congratulations to all of my students for surviving their midterms - very tired and proud professor over here! 📚❤️‍🔥🍁

🎨✨ NEWARK ARTS FESTIVAL POST #1: “ON PURPOSE” — OPENING NIGHT 2026! 🖼️🎉 If you weren’t in Newark last night, make it your business to attend at least a few events this week during the annual Newark Arts Festival, which kicked off in grand style yesterday at Express Newark! 🔥🙌🏾 As always, it was wonderful reconnecting with old friends, fellow artists, local art stars, and their families, friends, and supporters. But, most importantly, the ART did not disappoint! 🎨👏🏾💯 I’ll do my best to properly tag all the amazing artists featured in these photos as time permits. This year’s festival is especially meaningful to me because I had the opportunity to introduce Apanamae Productions to just about everyone who would listen. LOL! 😂🖤✨ 📸 FEATURED IN THIS POST: 🌟 Some of Newark’s best and brightest artistic talent! 🖼️ My painting, “May 2024 / Rep. Jasmine Crockett Addresses Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene During House Oversight Committee Meeting (B6).” 👕 The T-shirt I’m wearing, “Roma / Figure,” available through Apanamae Productions — Store 2! 🛍️🎨 Congratulations to all the artists participating in this year’s festival! 🥂🎉 I can’t wait to reconnect with familiar faces and meet those I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet. 👏🏾 A special shout-out to Bisa Butler (@bisabutler), acclaimed artist and curator, for bringing her incredible artistic vision to the 2026 Newark Arts Festival! 🎨✨ And congratulations to Adrienne Wheeler and Cheyenne Allegra Ceasar, curators of the “On Purpose” exhibition at Express Newark, for helping showcase the creativity and brilliance of Newark’s art community.🖤🙌🏾 📍 There’s still so much to see and experience this week! For the full lineup of events and more information, follow @newarkarts. 🚀 More to come! STAY TUNED! 👀🔥

MAKE A ZINE OUTSIDE (YOUR HEAD). To publish WITH and not ABOUT place requires new tools, new systems, new desires. For the last few months, we have been nurturing these possibilities into reality. Our mobile publishing studio is nearly complete: tough on the outside, tender on the inside and ready to go nearly anywhere. Explore four floors of 50+ artist studios and community workshop spaces while enjoying a warm brunch and breakfast cocktails. RSVP via 🔗 link in bio! Visit the studio of Amanda Thackray! @mandattacks | Studio 310 ✨ Amanda Thackray is a community-engaged multidisciplinary ecofeminist artist-educator based in Newark, NJ. Her work pulls on the tenuous threads between nature, industry, and human experience, evoking strong themes of speculative fiction, labor, and the entwinement of human bodies with nonhuman kin. Thackray’s work is known for its meticulous detail and layered compositions that draw inspiration from organic forms and industrial structures, creating art that evokes both beauty and a sense of unease. She is the recipient of multiple Creative Catalyst Fellowships, a Puffin Foundation Grant for Environmental Art, and a NJ State Council Artist Fellowship. She has held residences through The Arctic Circle, Svalbard; Center for Book Arts, NYC; and Museum of Art and Design, NYC, among others. Thackray earned a BFA from Mason Gross at Rutgers University and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). She is currently the inaugural EPA Lower Passaic River Artist-in-Residence. Learn more about the artist at 📲 ajthackray.com/ or in person on Oct. 11th! 🌟 PES STUDIOS, part of Project for Empty Space, is a nonprofit arts initiative creating safe and equitable spaces for social dialogue. We support socially engaged artists by amplifying narratives often erased, while holding space for reflection and imagining new futures.
