What a great rafting trip with fun people! Despite the random cold snap and rain, it’s so great to float down a river on some class 3 and 4 rapids. Next time, we’re doing class 5’s!

Finally returned to the Sierra Nevada. The Sequoia National Forest preserves some of the largest and oldest giant sequoia groves on Earth. The monument also spans across rugged mountains, deep canyons, and montane forests.

Lower elevations are dominated by chaparral and woodlands of Blue Oak and Gray Pine, adapted to hot, dry summers. Mid-elevation forests contain Ponderosa Pine, Incense Cedar, Sugar Pine, California Black Oak, and the iconic Giant Sequoias, which rely on periodic fire to clear undergrowth and release seeds. Higher elevations transition into Red Fir forests, alpine meadows, granite peaks, and subalpine ecosystems where harsh winters and thin soils support specialized plants and wildlife.

This differs greatly from the mountains of Southern California, which are lower, less rugged, and influenced heavily by the coast.

The runner in this picture was called out because the umpire was screened from seeing the ball on the ground. Umpiring isn’t easy — calls happen in split seconds, and mistakes are part of sports. But the priority should always be getting the call right, not sticking to the original call out of pride or ego.

In CIF games, there are two other umpires on the field, and in this play the ball is clearly out while the home plate umpire’s view is blocked. Under the current system, the home plate umpire must ask for help before a call can be changed.

Two simple fixes could help:

1. If another umpire clearly had a better angle, they should be allowed to step in automatically.
2. If a coach asks for help on a disputed call, there should at least be a quick conference.

This isn’t about attacking umpires — missed calls happen. But in playoff games, one missed call can end a season and cost athletes another chance to compete.

Should CIF allow umpires to automatically conference on disputed calls when another umpire had a better view? And should coaches automatically be granted a conference request?
