What a treat to have found a favourite book from my shelf this week. This book about Tales of the Lonesome Pine Used Books, located at Big Stone Gap in Virginia is an honest, humourous and heartwarming narrative about the highs and lows of running an indie second hand bookstore, and all the people that kept this space going. The bookstore has since closed after the owners relocated, but this book is timeless.

And so timely, for me to pick it up right before @sgibd26. In pragmatic Singapore, dreams are precarious. Anyone who has any tangential relationship with arts and creative can tell you - that we’ve embraced the impermanence with every creation, that the demise of any collective, institution or projects feels almost inevitable when your existence is stacked against capitalism. That one day it’ll all be a pipe dream. As someone who once had these dreams, I learnt to go with the flow and not let sentimentalism get the best of me.

Yet, in my 6 years on #bookstagram, I’m constantly inspired by the people who believe in books, literary arts and all the wonderful things in between. I witness how the indies - publishers, bookstores, creative collectives - keep pushing the needle to put reading at the collective consciousness of this country. I was just chatting with friends at the sg writer fest’s launch earlier; that I’m so happy to see more people reading, ever more reading communities emerging and I want to believe - that there is more meaning to life in Singapore beyond the tight spaces we’re forced to navigate, that we can have a life filled with the best of what art can offer us beyond the choices we have to make.

And look, we now have our inaugural @sgibd26 happening tomorrow! Im so in awe of the small and mighty team who have pulled this massive event off. Anyone who’s in Singapore this weekend - go visit bookstores! Buy books! Attend events! Say hi to the authors and booksellers!

And visit @wormholesg’s popup at @dakotadreams123. What a lovely homecoming - the first popup back in 2023 was the one where I met so many #sgbookstagrammers for the 1st time. They’ll always have my heart ❤️ Scroll for the fun we had, and the fun you’ll have this weekend.

I’m not just asking for money…
I am asking for a chance to live with dignity and to survive this endless pain.
Every day that passes feels harder than the one before, and fear and exhaustion have become part of our lives.

We do not have the luxury of waiting…
There are patients who need treatment, children who need food and safety, and a family trying to stay strong despite everything.

Your donation, no matter how small, can make a huge difference.
It could mean treatment, a meal, warmth, or even a moment of hope for someone who has lost everything.

Please don’t leave us alone in this pain…
Your kind hearts may be our salvation after God.

indie bookstore day is almost here! 📚🛍️
•
my ever-so-loving and *definitely* not regretful boyfriend sent me a list of the Chicago indie bookstores participating in a book crawl this year, so now I’m knee deep in plans for how to tackle the day and he’s just along for the ride👼🏻 to be fair to him tho we’re strategizing for a book/restaurant/repeat-style afternoon, so I think he’ll still end up having a good time 🙈💖
•
with that, these are the books on my short list! who knows if I’ll actually stick to this list in the long run or not, but from the jump these are what I’ll be looking for 💸
•
are you participating in any bookstore crawls this year? I purposely held back at book con so that I would have a budget leftover this weekend LOL

Six years in, and what started as an online space to connect over Southeast Asian literature has turned into so much more. Along the way, we’ve found ourselves not just reading together, but reflecting and sharing how stories help understand the world around us.

We are very much an online book club, but we’ve also been lucky to have had fond memories of meeting with our LiteraSEA community offline — from chats with authors, to catch-ups with fellow readers. For our 6th birthday, we decided to scroll through our camera rolls and go down memory lane… 📸

This year also marked a first: the trip that lived in our co-host group chat finally leapt into reality ✈️ Yes, it was in fact Sahnaz, Xueh Wei & Vanessa’s first time meeting altogether in person! (Sebby, you were dearly missed 🥲). We had such good fun in Ho Chi Minh City, think: great food, late-night conversations, serendipitous detours, and books, of course.

Now as we turn the page into year seven, we’re looking forward to doing more reflecting and archiving (zines, anyone?); and we can’t help but think about what’s next – if you would be up for more IRL LiteraSEA moments?

Here’s to six years of stories — and many more chapters together. <3

ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါသည် / Terima kasih / 谢谢 / Thank you 🧚🏻‍♀️

Hope you’re enjoying your 🎄 Christmas break! I’m so grateful for 2024. This one is dedicated to the wonderful folks whom I’ve met through #bookstagram and #wordpress 💓

For the longest time, reading has been a solitary activity for me. And it suited my extremely introverted self. Who knew that years later, I will find myself looking forward to attending book events and meeting other like-minded readers? For someone who can attend entire networking sessions without saying a word, this was a miracle. I’m always in awe of our innate ability to hit it off with fellow #bookstagrammers even if we’ve never met before IRL. This year, from @sgwritersfest to events organised by @definitelybooks and @wormholesg, every single gathering was a fun and joyful encounter, and it’s heartwarming to know that these events have become somewhat of a constant every year. Whether it’s laughing out loud with @aqilahreads, long chats with @thebrowngirlreads_ or squealing excitedly at @maireadingparty’s big sister energy, I can 100% say that book people are truly my people 💓 thank you to everyone of you who made my year such a memorable one. Shoutout to @oidavidah for your enthusiasm and @tarotonthemoon for the affirming card reading!

Years ago, I found myself wanting to make a career switch. I started dabbling in code, thinking that becoming a developer was going to my next career milestone. I attended meet-ups and tech events, trying to get over my social anxiety and chart a new path for myself. Turns out that I can’t code to save my life, but I’ve gained a newfound respect for people who contribute to open source and community leaders who organise events to bring people together. In particular, I remember enjoying WordCamp Singapore because it was the first tech event where I made friends and learnt something new.

Years later, my work at @godaddyasia brought me back, and I’m grateful for my team for bringing me into the big family of #wordpress and being with this introverted and anxious ball of nerves at every step of the way at #wcasia2024. From Taipei to Cebu, KL and back in 🇸🇬, I’m honoured to continue this journey and grateful for the friends whom I’ve met.

Thank you ✨

We Are Not the Enemy: The Practice of Advocacy in Singapore edited by Constance Singam and Margaret Thomas

thank you to @ethosbooks and each contributor that made this book possible! with both yesterday's launch and the @bookbarsg date on 1 March, Ethos has created physical spaces for us to listen, connect, and reflect. i am so grateful to have been included in these sessions for i have learned more than i thought possible through conversations with great company. 🥹

panelists Cherian George, Rachel Yeo, and Corinna Lim were so insightful in their comments on the book and activist work at large; there is just so much to learn from these wonderful speakers and i left with lots on my mind, so i'm glad i met some bookstagram friends (Tanvi, Vanessa, and Cherry) outside to further discuss and digest it all.

i too was conflicted when i first heard the title as i wondered if mentioning and thereby defining "enemy" left a good first impression on people. thus i was glad to hear the careful thought that went into it and the discourse that followed. some want to catch the attention of and persuade the middle-of-the-road audience, yet others wish not to implicitly conform to a black and white narrative with this definition. i appreciated each person's reasons for wanting a more or less controversial title.

thank you also to the people at @cape.sg for creating an accessible handbook to advocacy (FREE e-copy on @ethosbooks website, and limited hardcopies at @bookbarsg with every purchase of WANTE), and for fulfilling the longstanding dream of having one.

This white kite was flown on the day of our Global Kite Flying in Tokyo Japan and sent to us by @mango.reads . She shares it together with these words and a poem that was translated for the exhibition „Voices of Palestine“

Palestine/Fukushima Japan “I know exactly how he feels”, by Jane Otaqui 「パレスチナと福島『私の心は彼の心とともにある』」ジェーン・オタキ

February 25, 2013

What unlikely parallels this world of ours produces
Atsuko’s Father travelling near his childhood home but not allowed to enter
Expelled so people say
By mankind’s greed and a failure to take full account of nature
With safety completely disregarded at such cost
When the tsunami swamped the nuclear reactor
Caused his longing for a land and life – forever lost
The same as Andy’s Pa, banned and excluded again by greed
Booted out at the point of a gun and no point for him to visit now and be taunted
By what should have been
His childhood landscape crushed and brutalized
While the world turns a blind eye
In the name of victims of yet another ghastly regime.

Note/付記:

The writer included the following description with her poem. “This poem was inspired by a conversation we had after our Japanese Daughter-in-law Atsuko’s Dad had travelled to the Fukushima area for a family funeral. He expressed his profound sorrow at not being able to return to the places he knew and loved as a child and my Husband, a Palestinian Father of Andrew, said ‘I know exactly how he feels!’”

Such a pleasure to attend my first bookish event back in Singapore at Ethos Dreams, the @ethosbooks National Day pop-up at Dakota Dreams, the little secondhand bookstore above Old Airport Road hawker centre that I covered when they opened nearly two years ago, and which is still going strong! So wonderful to catch up with the Ethos team, meet authors @alfiansaat, @fxris_jo and @kixes (whose book will be out soon) and finally put a face to many #sgbookstagrammers. Ethos Dreams runs from today till Aug 6, with special guests @oranglautsg, @booksnbeersg, @wormholesg and @walidj.abdullah; 10 per cent of proceeds will go to the Standing Solidarity Fund by @migrantmutualaid #LookingLit #theSGirecognise

✨✨ PRESENTING: 𝓔𝓽𝓱𝓸𝓼 𝓓𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓶𝓼 ✨✨

From 15 July to 6 August, check out #EthosDreams, a pop-up bookstore presented by Ethos Books & Dakota Dreams, which seeks to platform diverse perspectives from Singapore society, weave conversations across communities and showcase the Ethos Books catalogue in a fresh and unique space this National Day.

Don’t miss out on events presented by special guests:
@oranglautsg (15 – 16 July)
@booksandbeersg (19 – 22 July)
@wormholesg (29 – 30 July)
@walidj.abdullah (20 July and 27 July)

The pop-up will feature over 60 Ethos titles by local authors, artists and thinkers, celebrating multiple perspectives of Singapore. Trust me, you’ll want it to bring lots of cash and clean out those shelves full of great titles (DM me if you need a recommendation 😉)

10% of sales proceeds will be contributed to the Standing Solidarity Fund, a resource created by community group @migrantmutualaid as a direct redistribution channel for migrant workers’ needs.

Thank you @ethosbooks for inviting me to the media preview! I can’t wait for all of you to see the heartfelt documentary video produced by the team (premiering on 18th July) and psst…. There will be a very special event happening on the last week of the pop up - you definitely want to stay tuned! Also, pen your thoughts on #TheSGIRecognise and contribute to the wall of wishes from all of us 💖

Most importantly, it’s been so great connecting with my fellow #sgbookstagram friends. I can’t believe I’m meeting some of y’all for the first time - it feel like we’ve known each other forever. Last night was truly special and I can’t wait for us to meet again 💖 Books and stories truly bring people together, and being a part of this community is a privilege 🥲 shout-out especially to the girls whom I’ve been talking to for the whole night - WE NEED ANOTHER SOURSOP SESH AT OLD AIRPORT ROAD PLS 😘
