Attorney Alvin Leonard Bragg Jr. (October 21, 1973) is a politician and lawyer from New York State who is serving as the New York County District Attorney. He became the first African American elected to that office. He served as chief deputy attorney general of New York and as an assistant US Attorney in the Southern District of New York.
He is from Harlem. He graduated cum laude from Harvard with a BA in Government and earned his JD from Harvard Law School, where he edited the Harvard Civil Rights–Civil Liberties Law Review.
He clerked for federal district judge Robert P. Patterson Jr. before joining the law firm Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Lason & Anello, where he focused on white-collar fraud and civil rights issues. He joined the New York Attorney General’s office before becoming chief of litigation and investigations for the New York City Council.
He was appointed Chief Deputy Attorney General of New York. He ran the criminal justice and social justice divisions, overseeing lawsuits brought by the state against the Donald J. Trump Foundation, Harvey Weinstein, and The Weinstein Company, as well as the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 US Census. He became a professor at the New York Law School, where he was co-director of the Racial Justice Project. He is a member of the board of directors for the Legal Aid Society.
The New York Times reported that the district attorney’s office “has moved to jump-start its criminal investigation” into Trump’s reported “hush-money payment to a porn star who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump.” The office presented evidence to a grand jury regarding Trump’s role in the payment.
The Washington Post reported that Steve Bannon would be indicted by his prosecutors on the same charges of fraud for which President Trump federally pardoned him. Bannon was charged with “defrauding Americans who wanted to contribute to construction of a southern border wall, resurrecting a threat that Mr. Bannon seemed to have escaped with a 2021 presidential pardon”, and he pleaded not guilty.
He married Jamila Marie Ponton (2003). They have two children. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Great to join the @thenyic gala! We fought to pass the MELT Act to hold ICE accountable, and now we must fight back against legal challenges to these protections. I’ll keep standing with NYIC to defend immigrant communities and protect New Yorkers.
