POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Welcome to the big reveal of our themed photo competition for ANIMALS - Domestic & Wild. There was such a great response with incredible images. As this is the last competition for the year the judges decided to have 17 FINALISTS. We will show these in a random order and reveal the winner and 2nd & 3rd place on the 20th October. Even the winners won’t know who they are until the very end.

So let’s begin with these two photographs that highlight being in the right time and right place coupled with the skill to pull off capturing the moment.

‘Butterflies on the Wing’ by Brad Franks took us back to those delightful Cottingley Fairies photos taken in 1917, England. Brad’s butterflies are playful but also extraordinary. He was certainly in the right place and skilfully captured not one but three in one frame, and in such a magical way.

‘Connect’ by Rachelle Mackintosh gives us an image of one of the largest beast on earth yet somehow captures a moment unlike most. We are grateful for Rachelle being where she was so we can all sit back in awe. And it was in our backyard of Maroubra!

Tune in tomorrow for more FINALISTS.

A sneaky 5th Monday showed up in August so the ARTIST in FOCUS and FRAME, Brad Franks, gets a special extra mention. We thought we’d share some behind the scenes images.

Here he is in Charing Cross Photo with some of the artworks that he hung in his recent exhibition at the Ranken Gallery at the Waverley Woollahra Art School, talking through what he wanted in terms of framing with MASTER PRINTER and current FRMAER Iain.

Brad had a wildly amazing collection of works that day and I was privileged to see and hear the process of how he and Iain worked in this phase of an exhibition.

Though his show is over I’m pretty sure Brad would be keen to know you may be interested in a purchase, to have your own Brad Frank original. Come and chat with Iain who is happy to help make that happen.

Read all Brad’s answers and see more of his artwork on our website..

What is the best art advice you have been given?
Our ARTIST in FOCUS and FRAME for the month of August, Brad Franks, told us in the questionnaire:

“The encouragement and advice of my early art teachers has stayed with me all my life. I believe the best advice I received was from my high school art teacher in 1974 David Hull (U.K./AUS.) who was so enthusiastic about art and life that just being in his presence was inspiring, he said “Experiment, Experiment, Experiment!” He would also lock us inside a black box to contemplate the blackness.”

We’re not sure if locking people in boxes is really the way to help them but we certainly appreciate and get the exercise of looking into blackness, and within, is a great thing to do. 😊

We hope you have enjoyed seeing some artworks and images by Brad. He is such a fascinating character so please go and find more when you can.. His reach is wide being involved in so many areas.

If you’re keen to purchase any of his art you are welcome to let us know so we can work out how to help..

Thanks for sharing your art and stories Brad..

Being World Photography Week we’re showing the photographs of our ARTIST in FOCUS & FRAME - Brad Franks.

Brad wears many hats. His creativity bursts through most styles of art. If you follow his instagram page you will find many more images as he often posts photographic moments captured whilst on walks around his neighbourhood or wherever he ventures..

We asked Brad what defines a great artwork/photo?

“Great art? - I think that I have great art hanging on the walls in my home and it’s not because it is worth a lot of money, it’s not that kind of investment, it’s because it holds a conversation with me that never gets boring.”

We hope you may have conversations with the art by Brad Franks including his photos, his drawings, paintings and even videos.. why don’t you start a conversation here in our comments section.. we’d love to hear you responses to his works. Brad may even respond himself..

With such a rich career to date Brad had understandably a lot to say, but it’s in his art where he says the most..

Welcome back to our ARTIST in FOCUS and FRAME segment with multifaceted artist Brad Franks.

This selection of his work was made at various times over his career. Brad sites many influences which is always fascinating by our AiFaFs..

Brad first names illustrators and cartoonists who brightened up his youthful mind: Ronald Searle (U.K.), Spike Milligan (U.K.), John Lennon (U.K.), W. Heath Robinson (U.K.), Tove Jansson (FIN.), and Charles M. Schulz (U.S.A.). Some names will be familiar including that last one who made Snoopy.. I love that Spike Milligan was right up there too…

Later on the list swelled to include: Bruce Petty (AUS.), Michael Leunig (AUS.) amongst others.
Artists who connected to his frequency were Marcel Duchamp (FRA.), Utagawa Hiroshige (JPN.), Andy Warhol (U.S.A.), Vincent Van Gogh (NED.), Hieronymus Bosch (NED.), Brett Whiteley (AUS.), Francis Bacon (U.K.)
He also names photographers: Diane Arbus (U.S.A.), Man Ray (U.S.A.), Eugene Atget (FRA.), Frank Hurley (AUS.) and Grant Mudford (AUS.)

After all this Brad finally rounded off his answer to the question by announcing
“If you want a single artist though, I would have to sight Max Ernst (GER.) for his extraordinary experimentation, dedication and vision. “

Brad is an artist not afraid of calling it as it is… influenced by some of the greats we can see how his work beautifully entangles itself to all their visions and now settles amongst this uniquely expanding web of great art.

Humour, experimentation, compelling subjects, dark and light, all deeply personal, Brad’s world is there to see and take on board as you browse any of his works from any decade.

It’s a great pleasure to introduce our next ARTIST in FOCUS and FRAME - Brad Franks.

Brad draws, paints, sculpts, takes photos, makes video and has even trodden the boards! Currently he has an exhibition of new drawings at the Ranken Gallery at Waverley Woollahra Arts School in Bondi and this continues only until Sun 9th August.. [side note: we had the pleasure of framing his work and images here so some of the works in prep]

In our questionnaire we asked Brad what gets him out of bed each day?
He replied “the urge”..
We’ll leave that alone so we can each decide what it might mean 😊 .. but as he does have a current show on we also asked what he thinks of framing:

“I have always approached this as the full stop to a work, the final piece of the puzzle. The work should always dictate the frame… The work should breathe within the frame…”

Brad gave a longer response to this, and to all the questions. His writing makes a great read so visit our website to do that. Brad has a bio worthy of a published volume where you can be amazed and inspired at its full content.

The images seen here are part of his new show, go check it out soon before it closes!. We look forward to sharing other creations from his archive over the month ahead..

Strap in and stay with us….but don’t forget you can still visit the Ranken Gallery in Waverley to see his art up close and personal before it ends on the 9th Aug. Brad has been exhibiting his work since 1981 so expect a great looking show..
